Christian Biography of Julene Sullivan
Julene Teresa Sullivan, the daughter of Hubert and Louise (Brockman) Ostdiek, was born on August 7, 1943, in Lawrence, Nebraska. She passed away on December 1, 2024, at the Good Samaritan Society in Superior, Nebraska at the age of 81 years, 3 months, 24 days.
Julene was baptized on August 8, 1943, and confirmed October 27, 1953, both at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lawrence. She attended parochial school at Sacred Heart and was a Lawrence High School graduate. She earned her Bachelor degree from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. She was united in marriage to Richard Sullivan on February 19, 1966, at Sacred Heart and to this union they were blessed with eight children. She taught at Superior Junior High School for 3 years after her marriage and also worked in the Office of Aging for a few years.
Julene taught Biology and Physical Science for 21 years at Superior High School and was also the Student Council Sponsor until her retirement. She was a substitute teacher until her health wouldn't allow her to continue. She was a 58-year member of St. Joseph's Catholic church, an active Altar Society member serving as President and holding other offices, Mrs. Jaycee's serving as President and Mother's Club.
She enjoyed working outside in the yard, flower bed and tending to the garden. Her home was always open to everyone, she loved to entertain guests. She was known as the "keeper of the community kids."
Due to her failing health she entered the Good Samaritan Society in May 2024.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Hubert and Louise, brothers Al, Joe, Marion (Veronica), and Bob, her sister Mary A (Dick) Meyer; brothers-in-law Jack Bradley and Dick Mitton and sister-in-law Barb Ostdiek.
She is survived by her devoted husband Richard of Superior; children Anna (Lane) Hawley of Superior, Kate Sullivan of Georgetown, Texas, Rick (Marla) Sullivan of Gambrills, Maryland, Peg (Matt) Hayden of Lincoln, Kerry (Don) Trent of Plattsmouth, Teresa (Dustin) Hutmacher of Georgetown, Texas, Dan Sullivan of Lincoln, and Tom (Stephanie) Sullivan of Lee's Summit, Missouri; 16 grandchildren: Nick (Becca) Hawley, Alison (Andrew) Brittenham, Jacob (Maddie) Hawley, Isaac Sullivan, Hannah Sullivan, Liam Sullivan, Xavier Hayden, Sage Hayden, Vera (Alice) Trent, Zack Trent, Ryan Trent, Ayla Hutmacher, Greta Hutmacher, Isaiah Hutmacher, Clara Hutmacher and Evelyn Sullivan; 3 great grandchildren: Noah and Jonah Brittenham, Penelope Hawley and 2 on the way; brothers Glen of Aurora, Illinois, Lee (Joyce) of Grand Island, Larry (Diane) of Gretna, Allen (Nancy) of Lawrence, sisters Doris Bradley of Neenah, Wisconsin, Lou Ann Mitton of Thousand Oaks, California, Pat (Bob) Golka of Grand Island and sisters-in-law Helen Ostdiek of Lincoln and Jan Ostdiek of Gretna; nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, December 7, 2024 at 10:30 am from the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Superior, Nebraska with Father John Birkel officiating. Lector was Larry Brittenham, Acolyte was Ron Rempe and Altar Servers were Abram and Baxter Carter.
Music was "On Eagle's Wings," "How Great Thou Art," "Gifts of Finest Wheat," "Ave Maria," and "Here I Am Lord," with Arnold Miller as the song leader and Jacki Porter as the organist.
Visitation was held on December 6, 2024 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. with the family present from 4-5 at the Church. Rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm following the visitation at the Church.
Pallbearers were Julene's grandchildren. Honorary Pallbearers were Tim Bradley, Greg Golka, Mary Pat Nathan, Judy Bowman, Matt Sullivan, Rebecca Bowen, Brian Sullivan, Jim Sullivan and Phil Sullivan.
Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery at Superior, Nebraska.
A local memorial will be established and may be given in care of the family.
