Julia Cox Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by B.E. Brown & Co Mortuary on Mar. 9, 2026.
Sis. Julia Mae Hudson Cox was born March 17, 1931 in Gosport (Clarke County), AL to the union of Anderson Hudson and Alonza Bell Burrell. She transitioned from this earthly life at University Hospital on Sunday, March 1, 2026, in Mobile, AL. Sis. Cox was a faithful member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorate of Dr. Walter Vasser, Sr. She served as a Women's Sunday School Teacher, Youth Counselor, Baptist Training Union Counselor, and Vacation Bible School Counselor. In the last years before her transition to be with the Lord, she was under the watch care of her son, Elder Ortiza Cox at Abiding Word Fellowship Church.

Sis. Julia Mae Cox was a graduate of Baldwin County High School. She advanced her education and graduated from Alabama State University with a degree in Elementary Education. She began her teaching career at W. H. Council and also taught at Adelia Williams Elementary School. Due to health reasons, she retired while teaching at South Brookley Elementary School on Dauphin Island Parkway. After her retirement, she was chosen in 2002 to be part of her class to receive a fiftieth-year honorary diploma from Alabama State Teachers' College-Mobile Branch.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving and faithful husband of fifty-five years, Lathan Cox, Jr; her brothers, Monroe Hudson, Arthur Burrell, Sr., Roosevelt Hudson, and Frederick Hudson; her sister, Annie B. Hudson; her cousin, Cloceal Deyampert; her stepdaughter, Sandres Tarleton; her niece, Jessica Hudson; her nephews, Owen Hudson, Vincent Hudson and Perry Hudson; her sisters-in-law, Grethel Hudson, Berniece Cox, Leslie Burrell, Barbara Jean Hudson, and Lucinda Callendar.

As she cherished and nurtured him, she leaves to cherish her memory and to continue to live striving to portray the spiritual lessons she cultivated in him, her son, Ortiza (Alma) Cox. She also leaves a legacy of love, of treasured memories and of righteous prayers for comfort and safeguarding as a grandmother, great- grandmother, and great-great grandmother to her granddaughter, Briel (Daniel) Boyd (Mobile, AL), great-grandchildren, Danriel Boyd (Mobile, AL), Daniel Boyd, and Daneil Boyd; great-great grandson Braison Boyd; step-granddaughter, Joanna (Lester) Williams (Mobile, AL), step great-grandchildren, Ashton Wilson (Mobile, AL), Abyiah Wilson (Birmingham, AL), Seth McCants (Mobile, AL); and step-grandson Anthon (Gloria) Alston (Greenville, SC), step great-grandchildren, Anthon (Nyjai) Alston Jr. (Greenville, SC), Trinitee Alston (Greenville, SC), Naykias Alston (Greenville, SC), Ian Alston and Iaden Alston, Tye'Kayle Alston and step great-great grandson Nyiere Alston.

She leaves a treasure trove of precious, loving memories of wonderful times to her sisters: Edna Hudson of Gosport, AL and Carrie Hudson of Mobile, AL. She will be fondly remembered by a host of nieces and nephews-one she helped rear, Jermaine Hudson; and four devoted, niece Mary Williams and caregivers, John Hudson, Patricia Jones, and Contessa Jones; a host of cousins, one devoted, Deloris Winbush; and a grand god-daughter Shontay Thomas; her beloved Pastor, Dr. Walter Vasser, Sr. and her Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church Family; and her Abiding Word Fellowship Church Family.

She will also be dearly remembered and missed by a host of others whose lives she graced with her presence. Long time supportive neighbors and friends: Fannie Malone and the Malone family; Pamela Thomas and the Thomas Family; Chanel and William Richardson; Martha and Bob Foreman; Lillie Howell, Tracy Jackson, and Inell White.

She was lovingly cared for by her untiring caregivers, including Beverly Woodard who gave her the title "Queen". Her title "Queen" was also lovingly used to honor and esteem her by her other caregivers: Alaine Allen, Lisa Betts, Elaine Adams, Stephanie Brown, Deidra Ash, Mary Holmes, Tina Austin, Chandra Holder, Gloria Causey and the late Ida O'Neal.
