Julia is survived by her husband, Robert J. Slobig, and their children Emily (Daniel) Kaminski, Brendan (Ashley) Mannix, Alannah (Thomas Edson) Mannix-Slobig and Grace (Jeremy Stevens) Mannix-Slobig, one wonderful grandson, Morgan Mannix, Julia's sisters, Ellen (James) Davidson, Colleen (John) Cates and Marin (Michael Bloomfield) Mannix, nieces Lexe (Nate Tarvin) Davidson, Maggie (Aaron) Debow, Jackie (Analisa) Davidson, and nephews Jack Cates and Luke and Daniel Bloomfield, and grand-nieces and nephews James Tarvin, Elijah, Eve and Ezra Debow.
Julia graduated magna cum laude from Boston College in 1979, majoring in Political Science and English. She studied law at Northwestern University, graduating cum laude in 1982. She then practiced law in Chicago for decades as a tenacious trial attorney. She was one of the founding partners of the law firm Davis, Mannix & McGrath.
Julia was preternaturally capable, excelling in sewing, knitting, crocheting and other crafts. She threw outrageous parties and made sure every guest was welcomed and well fed. She served her parish as a Eucharistic Minister and a volunteer religious education teacher; and she shared her husband with the parish so he could serve as a deacon.
For 33 years, Julia loved living on Thatcher Road in River Forest, where she and Bob brought up their family. She was often on the sidelines of soccer fields, baseball diamonds and gyms throughout the state cheering on her children and their teams.
Visitation will be at Salerno Galewood Chapel, 1827 N. Harlem Ave., Chicago, on Thursday, January 16, from 4-8 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, January 17 at St. Luke Church in River Forest at 10:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to Catholic Relief Services (crs.org), particularly for the hungry and those harmed by the wildfires around Los Angeles, or to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (nami.org).

I am sorry I was unable to personally be with Deacon Bob and his children at the wake and funeral. i am having Masses offered for Julia at my parish.

Dear Bob and Grace, Alannah, Emily, Brendan, and her friends and family, I am so sorry for your loss.
Sending love and condolences from California wishing I could be there with you all to celebrate her life.
I´ve thinking of the last time I was in Chicago a few years ago and how happy I was to be able to enjoy an Italian beef from Johnnie´s with her and you Bob.
It was a quick visit for sure but one I´ll always remember and cherish.

John (Scott) and I, along with our then baby Jake, met Julia and Bob when we moved to Thatcher Road in 1990. They were wonderful friends and dear neighbors.
Because it was a little off the path, living there was special. The Thatcher gang, as we called ourselves, was a tight enclave of residents and an exceptional example of what neighborhood meant or should mean. Our "block" was actually 5 of them stretching along one side of a busy stretch of road, which was the price paid for the serenity of the Des Plaines River and forest preserve spreading out across from our front lawns. Memorably, the progressive Thatcher block parties involved traversing those long neighborhood blocks hauling, house to house, a "train" of Radio Flyer wagons packed with cold beer, wine, and elaborate foodstuffs, many inspired in Julia´s kitchen.
The memories are just so tender. Our family lived in our Thatcher home longer than any of the other homes that wound through our years in River Forest. And even after we moved from the neighborhood, we were honored "alumni" and always invited to the parties and events there, a precious bid since everyone in town wanted one of those invitations....
I last heard from Julia on my birthday in October. She commented on how she so fondly remembered our young days...that it was good to keep up on social media and she valued my photos and writings. She reminded me that we were born the same year and though the years, indeed, were catching up to all of us, she said she hoped I felt as good as I looked...What a sweet sentiment.
Warm, gentle thoughts today for an accomplished woman whose heart was a wide as her resume.

Ann and I visited my birth place in Chicago on many family occasions. Julia and Bob opened their home for our stays. They always treated our family with love and respect.
Julia was very Gracious and we had many meals including favorite restaurants such as Lou Malnati´s, and Johnny´s delicious best Italian beef in the world. We ate and drank until our bellies were full.
Our kids enjoyed each other´s company.
Marley their parrot often entertained us and joined in our conversations.
Julia and Marley were best friends. One time during the day Marley bit my left index finger. All the children thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread.
I still bear the scar and that scare reminds me of Julia and all of our wonderful times. Julia was my number one favorite cousin. We will truly miss her and continue to reflect on the wonderful times we spent together.

Julia was an awesome cousin. After I got my first job in sales in Chicago, I called Julia at her firm and she graciously invited me to her office and introduced me to her entire office staff. I think that was my first sale. I will never forget Julia´s kindness.
