Our beloved Momma and Grammy, Julia P. Mendez, passed from this earth on October 3, 2025. She was 90 years old. Grammy was the heart of our home and family. She will forever be remembered for her kindness and strong faith in God. As a mother to Cunie (Carol Mendez), Estela (Jose Reyes Enriquez) and Lily (Stephan Martinez) she was a doting, stern, and steadfast presence who instilled a strong loyalty to family and a compassion for others. As a grandmother to Selena (Josh Musgrave), Crystal (Arturo Morales) and Lourdes (Michael Vargas), she was the best! Grammy loved us unconditionally. She taught us that the most important things in life are God, family and being a good person. As a great grandma to Aaron, Gianna, LillyBella, Lena and Luna she was generous, loving and selfless.
Julia was born in Alamo, Texas on April 12, 1935, to Virginia and Marcelo Palomo. She was the fifth born of eleven siblings, whom she loved fiercely. Julia married Esteban A. Mendez on February 24, 1953. Julia and Esteban were the epitome of a devoted and loving marriage. During their 63 years of marriage, they lived in south Texas, western Nebraska, El Paso, Texas, and Ruidoso, New Mexico. Julia devoted her life to her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Virginia and Marcelo Palomo, her husband, Esteban A. Mendez, her brothers, Bernardo, Matilde, Domingo, Ramon, Cruz and Felipe Palomo; her sister, Claudia Donez, as well as her beloved in-laws, Felix and Donicilla Mendez, Pedro, Simon, Johnny Mendez and Genoveva Rodriguez. Julia is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, as well as extended family members.
The family encourages all those who loved her to keep her memory alive by sharing the stories she spent her life creating with all of you. As Grammy would say, “Que Diosito los cuide siempre.”
Los que tocan nuestras vidas se quedan para siempre.
