Julian Berlanga

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear father, Julian Berlanga Martinez, on May 6, 2023, age 79.  Julian lived a full and vibrant life filled with his passions for fishing, woodworking, growing vegetables, and barbecuing.  Julian was a beloved member of his community, always eager to engage with others and share his love for the outdoors.

Born in 1944 to Velia and Roman Berlanga in Sabinas Hidalgo, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, in his 20's he emigrated to the United States with his wife, Francisca Berlanga, settling in Houston Texas.  There they raised their six children, Martin, Gabriel, Francisco, Lorena, Victor and Flor.

Julian's passion for fishing was infectious, and he spent many happy hours on the waters of Trinity Bay, the San Jacinto River,  and Kemah, surrounded by the beauty of nature.  He loved nothing more than catching a big fish and sharing his excitement with his friends and family.

Julian spent many hours creating pieces of furniture, including tables, chairs and benches.  What began as a hobby soon became a lifelong passion.  He was happiest working outside surrounded by the smell of freshly cut wood and the sound of his tools.  He had a talent for transforming raw materials into beautiful, functional objects that will be cherished for generations.

In his garden, Julian was a master at his craft, and his natural ability of gardening was the envy of all who knew him. He took great pride in growing an abundant harvest of fresh vegetables, growing tomatoes, peppers, squash, chilies, which he generously shared with his loved ones.

Julian was also a master at grilling.  He enjoyed ribs, fajitas, chicharron, and chicken.  His pico de gallo was very popular and super tasty. He loved nothing more than inviting friends and family over for a summer cookout, where he would serve up his delicious creations and share in the joy of good food, good company, and good conversation.

Above all, Julian was a deeply social person, who thrived on the connections he made with others. He was a loyal friend, a caring neighbor, and a beloved family member, always eager to lend a helping hand or share a kind word.

Julian's passing leaves a great void in our lives, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all those who knew him.  We take comfort in knowing that he is now at peace, reunited with loved ones who have gone before him.  He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Francisca Berlanga, his son Martin Berlanga and beloved granddaughter, Cassi Banda. Rest in peace, dear Dad, and thank you for the joy, memories, and light you brought into our lives.
