Julius Ferdinand Ferch, 92, of LaMoure, ND passed away at home July 16, 2024 surrounded by family and under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
He was born August 24, 1931 at Fargo, ND to Ferdinand and Anna (Schmidt) Ferch. He grew up and attended school in the LaMoure area. After his schooling, Julius farmed with his dad. For one winter, he went to Washington where he was employed with Boeing. While working on the farm, he also helped with building the elementary school in LaMoure. On June 12, 1959, he married Grace Warren in Moorhead, MN. They made their home on the family farm where they raised their family and Julius continued his lifelong career of farming. He was honored to have been the recipient of the Conservation Farming award. He was a board member of the Verona Elevator, and he was a 20-year member on the Ryan Township board and served as their treasurer. During his farming career, Julius enjoyed doing research for increasing crop production. In his later years, researching soil health became a topic he was very interested in. He continued his research and would discuss cover crop benefits until the very end. He truly loved farming and trying to make the farm he built better. Julius never truly retired from farming. His work ethic had a strong influence on his children and his grandchildren. Farming was not a job, it was his hobby and his life.
He is survived by his wife Grace; three sons, Kraig (Candace) Ferch, Raulin Ferch and Loell (Shona) Ferch; daughter Ronna (Cory Reiser) Hesby; his sister, Lois (Rueben) Lackman; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Julius was preceded in death by his parents, sister Ruth Slotten and great-granddaughter Khloe Bolte.
Visitation will be held on Monday, July 22, 2024 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. followed by the funeral at 2:00 p.m. at Bear Creek Lodge in Verona, ND. Burial will be at Rosehill Cemetery near LaMoure. The service will be live streamed here.
