Julius was born the son of Peter and Katharina (Banowetz) Reuter on July 20, 1931 in Sugar Creek, IA. He attended St. Joseph Catholic School in Sugar Creek, IA through the eighth grade, before moving and starting work full-time in Lost Nation, IA, as a mechanic at the John Deere dealership. After meeting the love of his life when they were teenagers on June 14, 1949, they courted and then he proposed marriage on December 25, 1952. On November 24, 1953, Julius married Mary Kilburg. They lived in Lost Nation when they were first married. Then eventually moved onto the Reuter family farm as the third generation to own and operate it. After retiring from farming, the couple moved to Alamo, TX to live for 15 years. The couple would go on to raise 17 children and celebrate 57 years of marriage until her passing on May 26, 2011.

No one was ever a stranger to Julius, as he made friends wherever he went.
