Jupian Jupchung Leung

Jupian Jupchung Leung of Bellingham, Washington, age 79, went to be with the Lord on November 16, 2025. He was born in Sekki, China on September 7, 1946, and during his early life he also lived in Macau and Hong Kong.

Jupian attended San Diego State University in California from 1968 – 1973 earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology as well as a Master’s Degree in Educational Psychology. In 1973, Jupian immigrated to Canada and attended the University of British Columbia (UBC). He completed an EdD in Educational Psychology at UBC and later obtained a PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana - Champaign. He taught Educational Psychology and Child Development at the University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh for 25 years from 1987 – 2012, and in 1992 Jupian was presented with the Distinguished Teaching Award.

On June 29, 1996, Jupian married the love of his life, Cheryl Van Der Wegen, and earlier this year they celebrated 29 years of marriage. In 2012, Jupian and Cheryl retired and moved to Bellingham to be closer to his family, taking care of his mom in Vancouver, Canada from 2013 – 2018.

One of the things Jupian enjoyed most was following Big Ten sports. He also loved Chinese food, especially dim sum and other dishes from restaurants in Vancouver and Richmond. In addition, he liked keeping an eye on the stock market.

Jupian was preceded in death by his mother, Maria Kit-Fong Leung, his father, Joseph Luk-Sang Leung, his brother, Patrick, and his sisters, Leung Tsui Yu and Mai.

He is survived by his wife, Cheryl; brothers Francis (Virginia) Leung and Jeremy (Patricia) Leung; and many nieces and nephews and their children.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, November 22nd at 11:00am, followed by a memorial service at 12:00pm with a reception following at Westford Funeral Home (1301 Broadway, Bellingham).

Jupian will be remembered for his encouragement and generosity.
