Karen S. Grossman 4/11/1948-7/5/2022
Karen Sue Grossman (Voss) passed away on July 5, 2022 in her home of natural causes at age 74. Memorial Funeral services will be held at Bonner Springs United Methodist Church on July 16 at 11:00 am. She is survived by her older brother Kenneth Voss, her sons Jon Grossman (Angela) and Ryan Grossman, four grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Karen was preceded in death by her sister Melba Engel and her husband Richard Grossman.
Karen was born in Concordia KS to Rudolph and Inez Voss. The family moved several times, settling in Manhattan KS where she graduated high school and started college at Kansas State University. It was there that she met Richard Grossman. After Karen graduated with a BA in Elementary Education, she went to Cedar Rapids IA to start teaching. One year later, she went to Horton KS to continue teaching. On January 1, 1975, she and Richard were married in Horton. From there they moved to Cullison KS, to Richard's family farm. Karen taught 3rd grade at Haviland Elementary School, completed her MLS degree from ESU, and had Jon and Ryan.
Richard died in an auto accident in 1989. Two years later, Karen moved the boys to Larned KS, where she worked as a librarian for the Ft. Larned School district. She would retire from education after 38 total years, and after remaining in Larned for a few years, moved up to Bonner Springs KS in 2017. During and after her teaching career, she played piano and organ for the churches she attended, including Cullison UMC, Larned UMC, and Bonner Springs UMC. Karen also enjoyed travel, having been to Israel, Alaska, and multiple points in between over the years. She did needlepoint and crochet, dove deep into her family genealogy and remained active in her churches, leading study groups and volunteering in addition to playing music.

I never met Karen face-to-face but she messaged me a few times on the Larned UMC's facebook page. She was always kind and supportive. I've heard wonderful things about her musical ministry at the church, and how big hearted she was to people of all ages. We are sorry for your loss. Karen shaped countless lives. She truly was a servant of Christ. We thank you for sharing Karen with us. We are praying for you. May God's love and comfort surround you today and all of your days, and may memories warm your hearts.
