Karen N. Kiernan, a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on November 2, 2025, her 90th birthday, surrounded by her loving family in Enon, Ohio. She was born on November 2, 1935, in Reserve, New Mexico, the daughter of the late Raymond and Decima (Burch) Cowsert. She spent her childhood living in New Mexico and California with her mother and extended family. She graduated from Brawley High School as the Salutatorian of her class and then went to Brigham Young University where she earned her degree in Education. She went on to teach English Literature at the High School level in California including at her own Alma Mater. Karen lived a life rich in love, service, and commitment to her family.
A longtime member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she was known for her unwavering faith, dedication and beautiful singing voice. Throughout her life, Karen nurtured her passions which included family history, quilting, reading, gardening, traveling, and photography. Karen had a thirst for knowledge and adventure. She had a natural ear for languages too. She traveled extensively as a young woman in Europe where she met and married Leo Kiernan of The Bronx, New York while he was stationed in Germany. They returned to the United States when his tour of duty overseas was complete and raised three children in the Fairborn area. After their divorce and when her children were in school Karen returned to work as a social worker for the Montgomery County Welfare Department for a few years and then as administrative support at Wright-Patterson AFB for over ten years. In retirement, she enjoyed more travel, often visiting her children who were also serving in the military and stationed around the world. These interests not only filled her days with joy but also allowed her to connect deeply with her loved ones, forging cherished memories that will last a lifetime.
Karen is survived by three children: Karla Kathleen (Barry) Baber, Kristina (Bernard) Kriechel, and David (Sharri) Kiernan. Her legacy also includes ten adoring grandchildren: Tyler, Zackary, Victoria, Cordell, David, Joshua, Emily, Francesca, James, and Sophia, alongside three great-grandchildren: Isabella, Hunter, and Aurora. Each of them held a special place in her heart, and she took great pride in watching them grow and achieve their dreams.
A funeral service will be held on Monday November 10, 2025 at 6:00 P.M. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3080 Bell Drive in Fairborn Brother Orson Porter officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. until the time of service.
