Karen Newman Midgett, a loving and kind-hearted woman, passed away on April 27, 2023, in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Born on October 20, 1952, in Greensboro, North Carolina, Karen was the daughter of Evelyn Booth Newman and the late Joe Henry Newman.
Karen is survived by her devoted husband, Freddie Midgett, and their two loving children, Craig Midgett (Sarah) of Manns Harbor, NC and Carrie Coker (Wesley) of Elizabeth City, NC, and. She was a proud grandmother to Madison Coker (Erin), Kelsey Coker, and Annabelle Midgett. Karen is also survived by her mother and her brother, Hank Newman. In addition to her father, Joe, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Barry Newman, and Todd Newman.
Karen was a dedicated and creative Teaching Assistant for the Elizabeth City Pasquotank County School System for thirty-two years, where she touched the lives of countless students and staff with her warmth and compassion. She was a cheering coach for J.C. Sawyer and Weeksville Elementary schools for many years. She was also a member of the NC Association of Teachers Assistants for many years (as State President from 2007-2009). Karen was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church where she served several years as Methodist Youth Fellowship Leader.
In her free time, Karen enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, creating beautiful memories that will be cherished for years to come. She had a special knack for making everyone around her feel loved and valued, and her kindness was a guiding light for all who knew her.
Karen's legacy will live on through the many lives she touched, as she leaves behind a world made brighter by her presence. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2023 from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. at Twiford Memorial Chapel. The family will receive visitors at all other times at 984 Albemarle Drive, Elizabeth City, NC. A funeral service will take place on Sunday, April 30, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at Twiford Memorial Chapel with Pastor Jerald Craddock officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Manns Harbor, NC.
