Karen Sue Sims, known affectionately as Abuela by her grandchildren, passed away peacefully on August 16, 2025, in her hometown of
Odessa, Texas. Born on March 6, 1965, in the same vibrant city, Karen's life was a testament to her unwavering kindness and the joy she brought to those around her. Her 60 years were marked by an enduring dedication to her family, her work, and the simple pleasures that brought light to her everyday life.
Karen's journey began as a bright-eyed daughter in Odessa, where she would grow into the compassionate and hardworking individual known to all. After graduating from Odessa High School, she embarked on a career path that would define much of her life's work. For 20 years, Karen served her community as a Certified Nursing Assistant, specializing in geriatric care. Her love for helping people was not just a career; it was a calling that she embraced wholeheartedly, touching the lives of many elderly individuals and their families with her warmth and care.
At the heart of Karen's world was her cherished family. She is survived by her loving husband, Jaime Armendariz, who stood by her side in both joy and sorrow. Together, they raised two daughters, Rosanna and her husband, Jose Lujan, and Brandy Zamorano, who will carry on her legacy of love and resilience. Karen also leaves behind her devoted brother, Gary Sims, and her two sisters, Cindy and her husband, Paul Howard, and Joann Woodruff. Her four grandchildren, Gabriel, Jada, Isiah, and Nevah, were the sparkle in her eye, along with numerous nieces and nephews, will miss her deeply.
Karen's life was one of active engagement and enjoyment. A woman who worked tirelessly to provide for her family, she was also known for her generosity, often said to give the shirt off her back to anyone in need. Her favorite pastimes were those spent outdoors, whether it was a quiet afternoon fishing or tending to her garden, where she found solace and joy in the beauty of nature. Her love of music was eclectic, ranging from country to lively rhythms of Tejano music.
In the comfort of her home, Karen could be found engrossed in episodes of her favorite TV shows, such as 'Bones,' 'Charmed,' 'Criminal Minds,' 'NCIS,' and 'Ridiculousness.' Her competitive spirit shone through during family game nights, where she was the undisputed champion of card games like Old Maid, Uno, and Trouble. A connoisseur of her husband's cooking, she had an unwavering fondness for his red enchiladas, tater tot casserole, cheese sticks, and, of course, cookies that would always sweeten their family gatherings.
Karen Sims lived a life that exemplified the beauty of simplicity and the importance of caring for others. She left an indelible mark on the hearts of those she met, and her memory will be treasured as a beacon of love and kindness. Her passing is not only a loss but also a celebration of a life well-lived, filled with moments of laughter, love, and the unwavering strength of family bonds.
