Karen Elizabeth Sloat-Olsen, beloved wife, devoted mother, proud grandmother and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 19, 2024. She was 64 years old.
Karen was married to Eric Olsen for 40 wonderful years, a union marked by deep love and unwavering support. Their relationship was a testament to enduring devotion and partnership, filled with mutual respect and affection. Together, they raised two children, Hannah and Christopher, and were blessed with three grandchildren, Morgan, Evan and Talon, who brought immense joy to her life.
Born on March 15, 1960, and raised in New Providence, New Jersey. Karen was the daughter of Fred and Betty Sloat. She was the loving sister to John Sloat and the caring sister-in-law to Jan Sloat. Karen was also a treasured aunt to Catherine and Jacqueline, and she held a special place in her heart for her son-in-law, Dan, and her daughter-in-law, Alicyn.
A proud graduate of Moravian College, Karen excelled in both basketball and volleyball, reflecting her spirited and competitive nature. Her passion for history and educating the public led her to a distinguished career with the National Park Service, where she dedicated over 40 years. Throughout her tenure, Karen held many roles, ultimately becoming the Chief of Interpretation for both Thomas Edison National Historical Park and Morristown National Historical Park. Her love for the National Park Service was evident in her tireless commitment and deep appreciation for the history it preserves.
Karen's love for others was boundless. Her pleasing nature, ability to make everyone around her feel valued, and genuine warmth made her a beacon of kindness and compassion. She had a unique talent for connecting with people and brightening their days with her smile and generous spirit.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at The Cross Estate in Bernardsville, New Jersey, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Karen's honor to Thomas Edison National Historical Park (211 Main Street West Orange, NJ 07052), Morristown National Historical Park (30 Washington Place Morristown, NJ 07960), the Bernardsville Police Department (166 Mine Brook Road, Bernardsville, NJ 07924) or the Bernardsville First Aid Squad (P.
