Obituary of Karen Bernice Wasko

Karen Bernice (Larson) Wasko

Karen Bernice (Larson) Wasko, age 90, passed away peacefully on August 25, 2025, in Shakopee, Minnesota.

Karen was born on February 26, 1935, in St. Paul, Minnesota, to Bernice and Roy Gilbert Larson. She attended Riverside Grade School and Monroe High School before graduating from Hamline College.

In 1960, Karen married the love of her life, Doug Wasko. Together they built a life filled with faith, family, and music. She was the devoted mother of three children-Paul (spouse - Lori), Peter, and Kristin (spouses - Hugh (dec.), Patrick) -grandmother to four-Kaitlyn, Emma (spouse - Isaiah), Ashley and Benjamin (spouse - Emmarae)- great-grandmother to two, Harrison and Henrik.

Karen's career reflected her love of children and music. She worked as a music teacher for KTCA and later as an elementary teacher in the St. Paul and Richfield Public Schools. Beyond the classroom, she poured her energy and talents into her church and community. At St. Luke Lutheran, she joyfully directed the children's choir, planned and led Christmas programs, and taught Sunday school for many years.

Throughout her life, Karen's joys were many: spending time with her grandchildren, celebrating the arts (especially music), camping and exploring nature, tending to her flower and vegetable gardens, planning family gatherings and special events, reading, cooking, and connecting with family and friends. She created a home filled with warmth, laughter, and music.

Karen lived in St. Paul (MN), Bellingham (WA), and Richfield (MN). She is preceded in death by her parents, Bernice and Roy Gilbert Larson, and her brother, Roy Christy Larson. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Doug, her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces, nephews, and friends who will remember her generosity, creativity, and loving spirit.

A celebration of Karen's life will be held on Sept 28 at 12:30 PM (visitation from 11:30 AM -12:30 PM) at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 1807 Field Ave, St. Paul, MN 55116. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the church.

Karen will be remembered always for her deep faith, her joyful heart, and the way she made every person feel special and loved.
