Karl Allen Howard, age 81, of New Llano, Louisiana, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on December 27, 2025. Karl was a beloved uncle, friend, neighbor and servant for the Lord, whose kindness and wisdom touched everyone who knew him. Born to the late Jessie and Rena Thomas Howard on November 20, 1944, in
Pelican, LA, Karl was raised with strong values. He lived a life marked by integrity, generosity, and devotion to those around him.
Karl attended school at Vernon High School, where he had a passion for football. The "Mighty Lions" they were called, and a lion he was. Karl was a star of Vernon Parish - an All-State running back from Vernon High School. Karl and his teammates had won the school's first state championship. Upon graduating from Vernon High School, Karl was given a scholarship to play football for Grambling State University. People who saw him play in the early and mid 60's still talked about his explosiveness and ability. The remarkable thing about Karl was that he was born with one arm. He did not let his disability affect his life nor his fire on the football field. He led the state in scoring in 1963 and compiled literally untold numbers of yards. He was known for his gentle spirit, his love for community, and his unwavering support for his family, friends, and church family. Whether sharing stories, lending a helping hand, or offering words of encouragement, Karl made a lasting impact on countless lives. Karl was a very hard worker. He was employed at Fort Polk Military base for many years and from there he became employed with the City of Leesville where he worked for 29 years before his retirement. Bro. Karl was a devoted member and deacon at St. Paul Baptist Church Inc., where he served faithfully under the leadership of Rev. Lawrence C. Williams Sr, as his pastor until his death. Bro. Karl loved his church family and his pastor with all his heart and soul. Every other Saturday of the month, you could find him inside of the church doing what he enjoyed, and that was making sure the church was cleaned. He served as the Sunday School Superintendent and treasurer. Bro. Karl and the men of St. Paul Baptist Church Inc. had organized a men choir. He truly loved being a part of that choir. Bro. Karl said the best decision he had ever made was when he accepted the Lord as his personal savior. He stated he would serve him until he died and that is what he did. Karl enjoyed watching football on tv, especially the Washington Commanders games. He would say, no matter if the Commanders won or lost, he would forever be a die heart Commanders fan. Karl presence brought joy and comfort to all gatherings. His legacy will live on through the memories shared by those fortunate enough to call him a friend. He was preceded in death by: His parents; sisters: Zettie Mae, Wanda B. H. Lee, Ora Lee Jordan, Mittie Mae Sturdivant, Shirley Jean Napoleon; and brothers: Augusta Howard, Amoz Howard, Jessie Howard, S.L. Howard, Irell Howard, and Oza Howard. He leaves to cherish his memories: Sons: Ralph Jones of DeRidder, LA and Dominic Wortham of Syracuse, New York. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
