Katherine "Kay" Athan Papageorge Muthig, age 90 of Appleton, passed away on Thursday September 28, 2023 surrounded by her loving family. She was born on January 17, 1933 in
Missoula, Montana to the late Thomas and Edna (Priddy) Papageorge. Her family moved to Washington State where she met her husband Kenneth who was stationed in Tacoma. After marrying Ken, they moved to Wisconsin to settle down and begin a family.
She was a people person, always ready with a smile. Kay loved her family fiercely and had many gatherings, making her delicious meals like she was feeding the whole neighborhood. She was extremely proud of her heritage, her father traveling from Greece to America. While in high school, she was a member of the Maidens of Athens. She went to Greece several times to see her family and visit the family home where her father was born.
Kay is survived by her children; Greg Muthig, Debbie (Charlie) Vanden Heuvel, Cynthia (Kenneth) Remus, Norma (Tim) Peerenboom, Karen Phelps, daughter-in-law Leah Muthig, grandchildren; Ben (Beki) Muthig, Robin Muthig, Chris Brennan, Rick (Brenda) Muthig, Bill (Tracy) Muthig, Nicole (Darren) Soman, Chris (Jill) Vanden Heuvel, Kelly Vanden Heuvel, Kari (Tom) Mattioli, Alisha (Eric) Calewarts, Lance (Amanda) Remus, Ally (Dave) Tanzer, Johanna (Aaron) Staniak, Hailey (Paul) Merkes, Jennifer (Mark) Benson, Sam (Gina) Phelps, Sydney (John) Hassler, great grandchildren; Dalton (special friend Bethany) Stoeger, Taylor Muthig, DonEvan Muthig, Codie Muthig, Nevaeh, Zaydan, Takodah, Braven, Soman, Trevor Vanden Heuvel, River, Harper, Skyler, Delilah Mattioli, Sawyer, Hudson, Isla Calewarts, Ezra, Adelyn Remus, Hugh Peerenboom, Alethia, Henry, Walter, Maddox Benson, Maxim and Hunter Phelps, a great great grandchild; Isabell Stoeger. Kay is further survived by her brothers Tom (Vicky) Papageorge, Hal Papageorge, many nieces and nephews, other relatives and special friends.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, husband Kenneth Muthig, infant son Johnny Lane, son Bruce, granddaughter Kailey May Peerenboom, grandson Jesse Muthig, daughther-in-law Patty (Greg) Muthig, sisters Georgia Papageorge, Charlotte (Jack) Shaw, brother John Papageorge, her special furry companions Issy and Sophia.
Visitation will be held on Friday October 6, 2023 at Valley Funeral Home; 2211 N Richmond St. Appleton beginning at 10am until the hour of service at 11am. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established. The family would like to thank Ascera Care Hospice and Care Partners for all of their love and care for their mother. We would also like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Glenda, who spent countless hours providing love and support to mom.
