Katherine Nivison Obituary

Katherine I. Nivison
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Katherine I. Nivison, 86, of Tolland, CT, who passed into the arms of the Lord on July 9, 2025, peacefully with her family by her side.
Kathy, as everyone called her, was born on March 1, 1939, in Mansfield, CT to Amy (Hawkins) Inman and Jesse Inman. Kathy fondly reminisced about her childhood in Mansfield, often telling the family stories about her house on Chaffeeville Road and raising lambs to show at 4H. Mansfield is also where her passion for religious music was fostered as she played organ and sang in the choir at the Mansfield Congregational Church.
Kathy went on to earn a degree in Education from Willimantic State Teachers College in 1961 and her Masters degree in 1971. Her teaching career took her to Monroe, CT and then to Vernon, CT, where she met her future husband and life-long partner Harvey at Lake Street School. Kathy and Harvey married in 1965.
With the birth of her first son Kathy resigned from teaching to become a homemaker. Kathy and Harvey moved to Tolland in 1967 and three more sons followed. Kathy loved children and often said her days raising four boys were the best of her life.
In Tolland, Kathy and Harvey joined the Tolland Congregational Church where Kathy sang in the choir and served as a deacon. Faith played a major role in Kathy's life and in 1982 she was called to the Columbia Congregational Church as organist and choir director, her dream job which she absolutely loved. She retired in 2001 but remained active in the Tolland Congregational Church directing her children's choir, The Joyful Voices, for many years.
In Kathy's free time, when there was any, she was a prolific crafter. Knitting, sewing, crocheting, quilting…you name it, she did it! In her later years she discovered a new love, genealogy. She became the family genealogist, tracing branches of her family back to 1474.
Kathy's favorite place to go in the world was the coast of Maine, specifically camping at Hermit Island. Starting in 1972, Harvey, Kathy and the family were a fixture there every summer. We hope Kathy is there now enjoying the sound of the waves and the salty breeze in her face.
Kathy is survived by her husband of 60 years, Harvey; sons and honorary daughters, Steven (Therese), Andrew (Jennifer), Robert (SaraBeth), Daniel (Sharon); Sister Janice Barry (Michael); cherished grandchildren Alex, Karly, Owen, Jessica, Gregory, Emily, Timothy, Chloe; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her brothers, Roger Inman and Harold Inman.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, July 17, 2025, from 5-7 p.m. at the Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Rd. (Rt 83) in Vernon. Her funeral service will be held on Friday, July 18, beginning at 10 a.m. at the United Congregational Church of Tolland, 45 Tolland Green, Tolland. Everyone is asked to please go directly to the church. Burial will be in the New Mansfield Cemetery. Memorial donations in her memory can be made to the Horsman Organ Fund c/o The United Congregational Church of Tolland, 45 Tolland Green, Tolland CT 06084. Dear Harvey and family,
I am sorry to hear about the passing of dear Kathy. I am grateful to have worked alongside her for many years and for her gifts of music and love that she shared so gracefully with the members of her beloved Joyful Voices. I fondly remember her very welcoming "Hello, Sharon!", when she greeted me.
I pray that all the lovely, loving memories you have will offer you some comfort in the days ahead.
May you feel God´s Good Grace upon you.

Harvey and family and Janice--Dicksey and I are very sorry to hear of Kathy's passing. She was a great cousin and, if I am right, the senior member of the Hawkins clan. She will be missed for all that she did, including her work tracking our family tree and her efforts to keep the cousins in the loop and in contact. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. I regret that, due to a pre-arranged surgical procedure, we will not be able to join you this week. Dicksey and Dick Hawkins
