Kathleen Capan Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Evans Funeral Chapel & Cremation Services - Forest Hill on Jan. 5, 2024.
We are sad to announce the passing of Kathleen "Kathi" Hope (Riley) Capan of Freeland, Maryland. She passed away at the age of 75 on January 04, 2024, comforted by the love and support of her family after a sudden battle with Melanoma.
Kathleen was born on March 06, 1948, to Paul and Virginia Riley in Baltimore, MD and raised in Dundalk, graduating in 1966 from Dundalk High School. Nursing was Kathi's vocation and first love. Kathi's first job was as a Pinkie at Church Home and Hospital at the age of 16 and because of her love of caring for people went on to study at Church Home and Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1969. She graduated from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She worked as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Manager with an amazing team of nurses at Franklin Square Hospital for 35 years. Kathleen was also a published author, publishing Fall Assessments and Interventions in the Journal of Clinical Outcomes Management in March 2008.
After a first date at Pecoras in Towson, Kathleen fell in love with John and later married in March, 1971. They built a home together in Freeland where they raised their three children, watched their seven beautiful grandchildren play, hosted holiday gatherings, watched the deer and hummingbirds in the wooded yard, and enjoyed their retirement together. Kathleen retired in 2013, after a hardworking yet rewarding career at Franklin Square Hospital. Kathi and John were fortunate to travel together to places like Ireland, Croatia, Alaska, Grand Canyon, and Grand Cayman. They took frequent weekend road trips and continued family vacations in the Outer Banks. Kathi enjoyed gardening, listening to music and going to concerts, relaxing at home with their Grand-dog Otis, dancing and reading with her grandchildren, and watching shows like NCIS and British detective shows with John.
Kathi is survived by her loving partner John Capan. She is also survived by son Jon Capan and his wife Kimberly of Parkton, MD, and their sons Justin and Peter, son Nicolas Capan and wife Victoria of Brentwood, TN, and their children Theodore and Rosalie, and daughter Lauren Schmidt and husband Walter of Forest Hill, MD and their children Colton, Caleb and Cassidy. She is also survived by her brother Michael Riley and his wife Darlene.
Kathi will be remembered for the light and energy she brought to a room, her enormous heart, her amazing baking, and the warmest hugs. She made an impact on many lives; she truly loved her friends and her nursing colleagues. She will be missed dearly by so many.
"My greatest achievements have been my children. My children and my grandchildren are my brightest stars, and I could not love them any more than I do." – Kathi Capan "He [John] was handsome and always very caring. I knew from the very beginning that he was the one for me." – Kathi Capan
A gathering and funeral mass will take place at Our Lady of Grace Church in Parkton, MD on Saturday, January 27th. A gathering will take place from 10-11am with the funeral mass beginning at 11am.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Our Lady of Grace in Kathleen's memory.
