Kathryn G. Nester, aged 89, formerly of Tuscarora, peacefully departed this life on November 12, 2025, at Forest Hills Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Walter B. Nester, who passed away in 2001.
Born on June 12, 1936, in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania, Kathryn was the cherished daughter of the late Gerald and Bernadette (Wirtz) Dougherty. Her early life was enriched by her education at Marian High School, from which she graduated with pride. She attended Empire Beauty School where she won awards in hairstyle competitions.
A woman of deep faith, Kathryn was a dedicated member of St. John XXIII Catholic Church in Tamaqua. She was also a long time member of St. Bertha’s church in Tuscarora and St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in McAdoo as well. She devoted much of her time to her love for sewing and baking, sharing her skills and warmth with those around her.
Kathryn's professional journey included significant contributions to the textile industry, where she worked in Brockton and Tuscarora. In addition, she elegantly balanced her career and family life as a co-owner of Dougherty’s Beauty Shop with her sister, which allowed her to connect with the community in meaningful ways. She also helped her late husband run his butcher shop and grocery store, The Valley Market.
Her loving memory is carried on by her daughter, Kira, wife of Matthew Schaeffer of Lehighton, and her two beloved grandchildren, Matthew and Annika and their father Matthew Stahler. She is also survived by her sister, Helen Dougherty of Tamaqua. Kathryn was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Dougherty.
In honor of her life, a prayer service will be held on Tuesday, November 18th, at 11 AM at the E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home, located at 655 East Broad Street, Tamaqua, Pennsylvania. A burial service will follow at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery in McAdoo, Pennsylvania.
