Keith Jay Burkhart, 72, of Sheridan, formerly of Sandwich, IL, passed away unexpectedly in a motor vehicle accident on Saturday, June 7, 2025. He was born December 22, 1952, in Sandwich, IL, the son of William and Lois (Tuttle) Burkhart. After the passing of Keith’s Father “Bill” in September 1972, and at the age of 19, Keith left Eastern Illinois University to attend Worsham College of Mortuary Science in Chicago to help his mother carry on the family business. In 1982 Keith purchased the Burkhart Funeral Home, becoming the 5th generation Funeral Director and owner, dating back to the 1850’s. Keith was very proud to have been awarded a Centennial Business Award from the Illinois State Historical Society which recognizes organizations and businesses in operation continuously in the state for 100 or more years. Keith had one son, Grant Evan Burkhart. Keith and Grant had a great passion for everything outdoors. Both Keith & Grant were avid hunters and fishermen and especially loved doing those activities together. Keith also loved listening to his cousin's Bluegrass music and was very proud of their musical accomplishments.
He is survived by his siblings, Karla Johnson, Kevin (Vicki) Burkhart, Kimberly Martin, Kathleen (Gary) Astin, and Kristi Erickson; one granddaughter, Laurelei Burkhart; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Lois Burkhart, his son, Grant Burkhart, his brother, Kent Burkhart and his nephew, Brandon Rogers.
A Visitation will be held from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at Burkhart- Eighner Funeral Home in Sandwich, IL. Funeral Service will follow at 11:00 am on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at the funeral home in Sandwich, IL. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Sandwich.
