Kenneth Lee "Ken" Hicks, passed away peacefully on January 4th, 2026, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in McDowell County on November 24th, 1951 to the late Virgil Lee Hicks and Dorothy Young Hicks. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers: Danny Hicks and Scotty Hicks.
Ken was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and a proud veteran of the United States Army. He honorably served his country and had a commitment he carried with pride throughout his life.
He was the beloved husband of Janice Carter Hicks; with whom he shared 55 years of marriage. Ken is also survived by his children: Misty Hicks Hoover and Bradley "Brad" Hicks; he is also remembered with love by his grandchildren: Emma Hicks Presley (and her husband David), Bryson Hicks, Brenna Hicks, Addisyn Hicks, Braylen Hicks, William Hoover and Madelyn Hoover; and a cherished great-grandchild, Freyja Rose Presley; a brother, Dean Hicks; several loving nieces and nephews.
Ken will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his quiet strength and the warmth and love he shared to all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, January 9th, 2026 in the Chapel of Yancey funeral Services. Military Honors will be conducted by the Sgt. E.L. Randolph Chapter #57 D.A.V. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Yancey County Youth League at 110 Town Square, Room 11, Burnsville, NC 28714.
