Kenneth Maul Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Farewell Funeral Service - Palm Bluffs on Jun. 29, 2024.
Kenneth Alexander Maul was born in Fresno, California, on March 20, 1942, to George and Ida Maul. He passed away on June 11, 2024, at Loving Care, a care home in Clovis, California, following a long struggle with dementia.
On August 17, 1974, Ken married Carol Angstman at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in San Francisco. Ken and Carol had no children; but they did share their home and lives with their beloved dogs, two Irish Setters named Brandi and Cinnamon, a silver beige Standard Poodle name Annie and a black Standard Poodle named Molli.
Ken was educated in the Fresno Unified School District, graduating in 1960 from Roosevelt High School. He went on to study Public Administration, receiving an AA Degree from Fresno City College, a BA Degree from Fresno State, and a Master's Degree from Golden Gate University.
Ken served his country in the U.S. Army, stationed at the Presidio in San Francisco.
Ken spent many years of his career working in the field of Public Pensions as Assistant to the General Manager of the City and County of San Francisco Retirement Systems, as Manager of the City of Oakland Retirement System, and as Deputy Director of the State of Oregon Retirement System.
Ken and Carol lived in San Francisco and Walnut Creek, California, and Beaverton, Oregon, before moving to Fresno in 1987. While in Fresno, both Ken and Carol obtained their real estate licenses and spent over 30 years as a team in the field. Ken ended his real estate career with Guarantee Real Estate.
Ken played the trombone in high school and college and was part of a trombone combo, The 4 Bones, that performed for various organizations. Later, he played in the Clovis Community, Reedley College Community, and Kingsburg Summer Bands. The highlight for Ken was the Clovis Community Band playing at the 70th Commemoration of D-Day in Normandy, France, in 2014, where he had the privilege of shaking hands with then-President Barack Obama. He also sang in church choirs throughout his adult life.
Ken and Carol owned investment properties in Beaverton, OR, as well as Walnut Creek and Fresno, CA. Many of their tenants became lifelong friends. In Fresno, they developed a very special bond with Isabella and her entire family: Cecilia, Israel, and Danny. Carol is especially appreciative of the love and devotion they showed to Ken throughout his illness.
Always civic-minded, Ken served on the Board of Directors of the Fresno Chamber of Commerce, Fresno Association of Real Estate, and Leadership Fresno Alumni Association. In addition, he served as President of the Fresno Chapter of the California Apartment Association and the Bullard Meadows Homeowners Association.
Ken and Carol chaired major events for the Fresno Association of Realtors, The Apartment Association, and Trinity Lutheran Church.
Throughout the years, Ken and Carol have been active supporters and financial donors to many groups, including Concordia College in Moorhead, MN (Carol's Alma Mater), and the Concordia Choir, the Fresno Philharmonic, Cultural Arts at Fresno City College, the Junior Company of Good Company Players, CASA, San Joaquin River Parkway, Fresno Aquarius Aquarium, Guarantee Goodwill Network, Central California Food Bank, The Terraces at San Joaquin Gardens Foundation, Fresno Community Chorus, and Valley Town Hall.
Ken is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Carol; his brother, Greg Maul; his niece, Kellie Maul; sisters-in-law, Velma Wesloh (Merlyn) and Harriet (John); brother-in-law, Myron Angstman (Suzanne); and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ida and George Maul; sister-in-law, Kathy Maul; and brother-in-law, Spencer Angstman and his wife, Shirley.
Carol extends sincere appreciation to Mark, Cleo, and the entire staff of Loving Care for the extraordinary care they provided to Ken for the past 20 months.
A Celebration of Life for Ken will be held on September 28, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Hope Lutheran Church, 5435 N. Fresno St., Fresno, CA. 93710 (N/W corner of Fresno and Barstow).
Ken's final resting place will be in the Ezra and Edna Angstman plot in Baldwin Township Cemetery, Princeton, MN.
Because Ken always loved having beautiful gardens at his home, it is suggested that remembrances be directed to the Landscape Fund at Hope Lutheran Church, 5435 N. Fresno St., Fresno, CA 93710.
And because Ken strongly believed that his mission was to help others, remembrances may also be directed to the Endowment Fund of the Terraces at San Joaquin Gardens Foundation (where Carol now lives) at 5555 N. Fresno St., Fresno, CA 93710. This fund provides housing and care for residents of the Terraces who, through no fault of their own, can no longer pay their monthly fees.

Ken was the epitome of the professional gentleman. My community interactions were so enjoyable with both he and Carol. He will be truly missed, however in a place where his legacy will live forever.
