Kenneth McVicker Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Faries Funeral Directors and Crematorium, Inc. on Jan. 10, 2025.
Kenneth Leo McVicker passed peacefully through the veil on Thursday, January 9th, 2025 at the age of 79 surrounded by his eternal companion, June Eleanor Turner McVicker, and his children.
Ken and June have been married for 55 years in this life, starting their family in Newark, Delaware, later moving to Chestnut Lane outside of Odessa, Delaware and finally settling in Clayton, Delaware.
Their children, Kenneth Leo II, Aaron Michael, Melanie Sue, and Briana Lea blessed them with 13 lucky Grandchildren, and 5 wonderful Great-Grandchildren so far.
Ken was a loving and devoted spouse and father, always the jokester, and could hold down and tickle his four kids all at once when they were little. Not the greatest speller, he named his first son after himself, as the joke goes, because he already knew how to spell that name.
Ken was born on August 7, 1945 in Philippi, West Virginia to the late Lois Virginia Moore and the late Leo Hall McVicker. The family moved to Baltimore, Maryland when he was a toddler and he spent most of his formative years on Sparrows Point. After his father died when Ken was 13, he helped take care of his two younger sisters, the late Pamela Robbins of West Virginia, and the late Crystal Strittmatter of North Carolina.
The family moved to Newark, Delaware when his mother met and married Louis Atwood who treated Ken like his own and became his father figure and inspiration for joining the military. Important to him was his faith, family, gardening, photography, cooking and family history. Ken wanted to be a cowboy when he grew up, but ended up following Louis's example by serving in the National Guard for 40+ years as an Aircraft Foreman where he was affectionately known as Mac by his fellow Guardsmen.
He loved the water, having been raised on the Chesapeake Bay water skiing, crabbing, fishing, ice skating, and canoeing with the Boy Scouts of America on the Potomac River. He loved His Lord, Jesus Christ, and served as Branch President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and saw that congregation grow to become a ward and himself become lay Bishop of the Smyrna Ward. Since then he has served His Savior, Jesus Christ, in numerous other capacities, and ministered to many brothers and sisters in the Church.
His legacy of faith, service and dad jokes will live on through cherished memories, and all those whose lives he touched and inspired. Ken appreciated all of Heavenly Father's creations, most of all flowers, but donations can also be made in his honor to the Missionary Fund of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by clicking the link HERE for instructions.
A viewing will be held on Tuesday, January 14, 2025 from 11 AM to 12 PM in the Faries Funeral Chapel, located at 29 S. Main Street in Smyrna. Funeral services will begin at 12 PM. Burial will follow at Gracelawn Memorial Park in Wilmington, Delaware.
