Kenneth Orr Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Palmer Bush & Jensen Family Funeral Homes - Delta Chapel on Jan. 5, 2026.
Kenneth (Ken) Robert Orr, Sr., passed away peacefully on December 31, 2025, at the age of 88 in Charlotte, MI. Born on September 14, 1937, in Dorr, MI, Ken's life was a testament to his enduring spirit and his unwavering faith. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Carole Orr, his brother Jerry Orr, his sister Beverly Coolidge, his parents, Paul and Betty (Herp) Orr, and multiple beloved dogs.
A proud graduate of Lansing Everett High School, class of 1955, Ken's work ethic shone brightly from an early age. His career began at Story Oldsmobile at 17 years old, where he worked his way up from a chauffeur to a mechanic, and finally to a service manager. In 1971, Ken and Carole embarked on a new adventure, purchasing Handy's Market on West Willow St. in Lansing. They ran the store with dedication and warmth, becoming a beloved part of the community until their retirement in 2007.
A man of many talents and interests, Ken's passion for automobiles was evident in his storytelling. He often reminisced about helping build a racecar engine at Story Olds, his eyes lighting up with the thrill of the memory. Ken's love for the outdoors was equally strong. He enjoyed hunting and fishing when he could find time and was a member of Pheasants Forever. After retiring, Ken and Carole settled into a home on Loon Lake in Crystal, MI, where he could indulge in fishing to his heart's content.
Ken's athletic prowess was evident during his high school years, and he remained a steadfast fan of the MSU Spartan's football and basketball teams throughout his life. Game days were sacred, and he relished each victory with the same enthusiasm as if he were on the field or court himself.
Known for his sociable nature, Ken never met a stranger. He could often be found engaged in long, animated conversations, sharing his wealth of stories, knowledge, and opinions with anyone fortunate enough to cross his path. His friendly demeanor left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Family was very important to Ken. He loved cooking and cherished the times when he and Carole could prepare large family meals. Their tacos and roasts were legendary, and family gatherings were always filled with love, laughter, and delicious food.
Ken leaves behind a legacy of love and passion, survived by his children, Sue Dalman (Larry), Ken Orr, Jr. (Lisa), Kim Fox (Pat), and Rob Orr, his 10 grandchildren, and his 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his dear friend and companion Kathy Doyle, who made his last several years so enjoyable.
Ken will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him, but his stories, his passion, and his love will continue to resonate in the hearts of his family and friends. As we say farewell to Ken, we celebrate a life well-lived and well-loved.
Funeral Services will be held, Wednesday, January 7, 2026, 1:00 PM at the Palmer, Bush & Jensen Family Funeral Home, Delta Chapel with Deacon Jim Courter officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends, Wednesday, January 7, 2026, from 11:30 – 1:00 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Pheasants Forever Michigan Chapter, in memory of Ken.

I was saddened to hear about the passing of Mr. Orr (Handy´s Store owner) I have many memories. My Father worked with Ken at Old´s Mobile. My Father Ted Liserio would take me with him to visit Ken at the store when I was younger we would be in the store longer then I wanted to be as they chatted for a while, talking shop. We would go at least once a week to pickup tortillas. I remember him smile and laughter him and dad shared. The market was truly special and will always be cherished. His kindness and warmth touched many lives, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. Please accept my deepest condolences during this difficult time.

Ken loved his God, his family, and his community. He was, in every sense, a good man with a big heart. I was introduced to Ken 47 years ago, when my new bride took me to her childhood store. From there, we continued the tradition of frequenting his store over the years. Handy´s was our go-to for everything Latino. Ken and Carol were gracious souls who greeted everyone with a smile-no judgment, just kindness.

Hasta siempre.

Ken was such a sweet, kind man. He treated my whole family with love & respect. I grew up around the corner from Handy´s. I remember the days when my 9 siblings and I would frequent his store to spend our allowance. Ken would take his time with each of us to ensure we got what we wanted. May he rest in eternal peace.

My deepest condolences to the family. I remember going to the store with my dad every week. "Mr Handy" would treat us like family. My dad spoke little English, but that did not deter him from having lengthy conversations with my dad about all the different foods we would purchase and how we would prepare them. He made us feel so at home; always welcoming and with a smile on his face. May he rest in peace!
