A memorial service for Ken will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, July 15, at Good Hope Lutheran Church in Titonka. The service will be live streamed on the church's YouTube channel. A committal service will follow at Good Hope Cemetery in Titonka. Visitation will take place from 9:30 to 11:00 AM on Monday at the church prior to the service.
In loving memory of Kenneth Robert Spear (70), a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and farmer, who passed away peacefully on July 9, 2024, surrounded by loved ones.
Ken lived a life dedicated to his family and the land he loved. Born in Buffalo Center to Robert and Florence (Van Hove) Spear, he grew up with a deep-rooted connection to farming, learning the values of hard work, integrity, and resilience from a young age. These principles guided him throughout growing up on his family farm where he worked to live and lived to work until he was called Home.
Following his graduation from Titonka High School in 1972, he earned his bachelor's degree in Agricultural Business from Iowa State University in 1976. Farming brought him home where he would not only create a deeper love for the family farm but would shine light on a love that would become his unwavering source of strength as his life partner.
As a husband, Ken cherished his wife, Deborah (Sachau), from the time they were united in marriage on August 20, 1977. They were married in the Good Hope Lutheran Church where Ken was baptized, confirmed, and remained a life-long member. Together, they built a loving home filled with warmth and kindness, where they raised their chosen children, Brennan and Eric.
Throughout their years together, the two found great support in friends as they cut out time to play cards, ride bikes, attend each other's milestone events, and raise their children. Deb and Ken enjoyed traveling together and attending Iowa State basketball games over the years. Ken was a pillar of strength for his family and community, always putting their needs above his own. He put in many years as a member of the Titonka Development Committee, church council, and the "Property Brothers" – the Good Hope Church Property Committee. He also served as President of the elevator board. His children remember him as a role model who taught them the importance of perseverance, hard work, and the joy of simple pleasures. His grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he delighted in spending time with them any chance he could. He loved being "Papa". On the farm, Ken was more than a farmer. His hard work and dedication ensured a legacy of agricultural excellence that will endure for generations to come.
Beyond his roles as a family man and farmer, Ken was known for his generosity and his willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. His kindness touched the lives of many, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him. Ken leaves behind a legacy of love, hard work, and unwavering faith. While we mourn his passing, we also celebrate a life well-lived and the profound impact he had on those around him. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and community.
Ken is survived by his wife of 47 years, Debi; their two sons, Brennan and Eric; daughter-in-law, Hannah; his grandchildren, Josey, Elijah, and Jaden; his sister Sharon (Allen) Divis; sister-in-law, Judy Spear; brother-in-law, Don Nelson; and many nieces and nephews. Ken was preceded in death by his parents, his mother and father-in-law, George and Eleanor Sachau; his brother, Roger Spear, and his sister-in-law, Phyllis Nelson.
