Akwesasne: Kenneth John "Tioherote" Thompson, 90, Snipe Clan, peacefully began his journey onto the Spirit Road surrounded by loved ones on Monday, November 17, 2025, at CVPH in Plattsburgh, New York.
Born at home on the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation on May 11, 1935, Kenneth was the son of the late Katie Ransom Thompson and Mitchell Thompson. He attended school on Cornwall Island and in Bombay, New York. In 1958, he proudly enlisted in the United States Army, receiving an honorable discharge.
Kenneth lived a life full of purpose, hard work, and dedication. He held many positions throughout his life, including years with the Seaway Corporation as an ironworker-a trade that took him around the world and earned him many lifelong friends. Known for his skill and heart, he was a devoted ironworker, an avid fisherman, a respected hunter, and, as many in the community would say, "the best medical transport driver in town." His warm smile, generosity, and humor touched all who crossed his path.
Kenneth and his mother, Katie, were well-known basket makers and traveled to many powwows and the New York State Fair, where he served for many years as Vice President of the Six Nations Agricultural Society. Deeply connected to his culture and community, he played and coached lacrosse and was a familiar face on the sidelines cheering proudly for local teams. Kenneth took immense pride in his nephews, the Thompson Brothers, and their accomplishments.
He cherished his community and especially appreciated the local waitresses at Twin Leaf, his caretakers, and the medical transport staff who supported him through the years.
Kenneth is survived by his children: his son, Vincent Barney of Green Island; his daughter, Sandra Thompson of New Hampshire; and his daughter, Andrea (Curtis) Thompson of Akwesasne. He is also survived by three granddaughters: Madeleine Farkas of New Hampshire, and Kaiya and Nikahehtah:ha Thompson of Akwesasne; his chosen children, Sherman, Shirelle, and Steven Jacobs, all of Akwesasne; and his siblings, Harvey Thompson of Onondaga, Lloyde, Yvonne and Patty.
He was predeceased by his parents, Mitchell and Katie; his siblings Vincent and Douglas Thompson; and his younger siblings Roger, Lavinia, and Gary Gray.
Friends and family may call on Thursday, November 20, 2025, from 9:00–11:00 a.m. and 2:00–6:00 p.m. at the Donaldson Funeral Home in
Massena, New York. A service will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. at the Mohawk Nation Longhouse, with burial to follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Akwesasne.
