Kenneth Dean Urfer, born on August 19, 1930, in
Portland, Oregon, departed this world on October 31, 2023, at the age of 93, in Glen Burnie, Maryland. He leaves behind a legacy of unwavering dedication and a life filled with remarkable achievements and cherished moments. Kenneth's journey began with a profound commitment to serving his country. In April of 1955, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Coast Guard, embarking on a 31-year career that would see him rise to the rank of Captain. Throughout his service, Kenneth demonstrated valor, honor, and steadfast devotion to safeguarding our nation's waters. Education was a cornerstone of Kenneth's life, reflecting his insatiable thirst for knowledge and his pursuit of excellence. He earned his engineering degree from Stanford University in 1953, a testament to his intellect and determination. In 1964, he furthered his academic pursuits by obtaining a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rochester. Kenneth considered himself fortunate to share his life with his beloved wife, Eunice Grace Urfer (nee Lundstrum), who preceded him in death. Their enduring love and partnership were a source of inspiration to all who knew them. Kenneth is survived by his devoted children, Kenneth Mark Urfer and Theresa Lauren Urfer, who carry forward the values and wisdom instilled in them by their father. He also leaves a legacy of love and joy in the hearts of his cherished grandchildren: Larry Komrower, Michelle Komrower, Logan Urfer, Piper Urfer, Samantha Urfer, and Sophia Urfer. PopPop's position as a grandfather was deeply cherished by his grandchildren. He stood as a truly honorable role model, a source of enduring inspiration for his descendants, motivating them to pursue greatness and continuously work towards personal growth and personal responsibility. Ken's journey through life was a testament to honor, sacrifice, and the pursuit of knowledge. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know him, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. A memorial service to celebrate Kenneth's life will be held in July 2024 in
Severna Park, MD. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the USO in his honor. Contributions can be made to the USO to support their important work. May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his family find comfort in the cherished memories they shared.
