Kent Scheier Obituary

Kent Darnell Scheier

May 26, 1945 - February 25, 2025

Sacramento, California - On February 25, Kent Darnell Scheier passed away unexpectedly at home after a brief illness. He was 79 years old.

He was born in Greenville, SC to Army Air Force 1st Lieutenant Milburn Darnell Scheier and his wife, Elva Ruth. As a military family, they relocated several times including to Mather AFB and then March AFB. In 1957 they were assigned to RAF Mildenhall where, as a middle schooler, he attended boarding school in London during the week with the other American kids from the base.

Back in the states, Kent's family found themselves at Kincheloe AFB in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. He attended Rudyard High School where he excelled at football and track, graduating in 1963. After high school, he enrolled at Lake Superior Community College, but the Scheiers soon found themselves returning to Mather AFB. Shortly thereafter, Kent enlisted in the Navy where he was stationed aboard the USS Agerholm, a destroyer bound for Vietnam.

Once out of the Navy he returned to school, enrolling at Sacramento City College, and ultimately graduating from Sacramento State with a BS in Business Administration with an emphasis on information science. There followed nearly 30 years at SMUD in information technology.

Kent and Martha were married in January of 1971, starting an adventure that would last for over five decades. He enjoyed playing golf, tennis, soccer, and softball and she enjoyed watching him. They enjoyed a love of sailing, camping, and skiing, which they shared with their children for many years. He coached the kids' soccer and softball teams and cheered from the sidelines when his son played high school soccer and volleyball.

Once retired, they had more time for traveling and discovered they liked the comforts of cruising. They made several ocean and river voyages until a bad back made walking long distances difficult for him.

His passing leaves a huge hole in this small, tight-knit family. Kent is survived by Marty, his wife of 54 years, daughter Brenna, son Colin, granddog Zoe, and brother Gary and his wife Colleen.

He will be laid to rest at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon on March 18th at 2 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be held in May. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Front Street Animal Shelter or the Sacramento SPCA.

Our heartfelt condolences to Marty and all of Kent's family during this sad time. Kent & I were in High school together (Rudyard MI, Class of '63). We also attended community college together in Sault Ste Marie (commuted 40 miles round trip every day!) where we took R.O.T.C. Kent later joined the Navy, and I went into the Army. Both did the Vietnam thing. We lost contact after that but thanks to the Internet we later reconnected in the late 1990s. And learned we both had ended up in the IT field. I will always remember Kent as a good friend, a decent, caring, steady, smart, athletic, and multitalented man. Of note, recently, he had been sharing his back surgery experiences with me (old guys' topic) as I was dealing with a similar condition. Kent's advice and counsel were immeasurable to me. Rest in Peace, Kent. And may your family take solace and comfort from your life well spent, and in the knowledge you will now rest for eternity in God's Arms.

I am so sorry to hear of Kent's passing. I worked with him in the IT department at SMUD. He was so smart and kind and was loved by so many. Kent was a very positive person and made working with him fun. My deepest sympathy to his family.
