I was surprised and shocked when I received the news of Kevin´s passing almost by chance, during a rare reading of a Salesianum e-mail message. I regret the lateness of my remarks.
Kevin was my best friend through high school and beyond. We shared an interest in history, books, boardgames, football and pop culture. We invested a great deal of time in playing boardgames (sessions usually lasting three hours or more), and I figure 25 to 33 % of that time was spent not actually playing, but discussing other subjects, and that was not wasted time.
We grew up with somewhat different personalities - Kevin was far more friendly and gregarious than me- but we remained united by our common interests. When Kevin made a new life for himself in northern New Jersey we maintained telephonic contact for a number of years. Sadly, we eventually lost touch with one another. Despite that, I never did forget him, often thinking of subjects that we could have talked about (a latest game purchase, a movie, a good book to read).
I have vivid memories of epic game-playing sessions and discussions, but for some reason my favorite memories are of the summer of 1981, just after graduation from high school. We gamed Squad Leader and took a daytrip to a Lancaster mega-mall in May, went to see "For Your Eyes Only" at the Concordeville cinema in June (along with brother Andrew), sessions of "Dungeons and Dragons" (that included Andrew and sisters!) that lasted until 10:00 PM or later (a game that Kevin and I outgrew at literally the same exact moment a couple years later), and refighting World War I to a near-draw all summer.
My very deepest condolences to the entire McKeown family.
