Kimball John Devoy of Lilydale died peacefully on Aug 23rd, 2024. Kim bravely faced dementia for the last 8 years with his loving wife, 4 children, and 7 grandchildren at his side.
The son of Kimball and Ruth Devoy (Weiland), Kim was born in Minneapolis on August 2nd, 1941, and grew up in Shakopee where he graduated from Shakopee High School in 1959. Kim spent his childhood working part time at the Shakopee Valley News where his mother was the editor. It was common for a middle school aged Kim to be running the printing machines and stepping in as a sports editor. Kim attended college at St. John's University in Collegeville, MN on an Army ROTC scholarship and graduated in 1963 with a degree in Accounting. Immediately following graduation, Kim was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army Signal Corp and reported for active duty. Kim served in the Dominican Republic and was honorably discharged in 1969.
Following his military service Kim attended law school at the University of Minnesota where he was on Law Review, received the American Jurisprudence Award in Constitutional Law, was named to the Order of the Coif, and graduated Magna Cum Laude. Over the next 40 years, Kim had a distinguished law career for multiple firms (Oppenheimer, Wolff,& Donnelly LLP; Doherty Rumble & Butler; and Lindquist & Vennum LLP) and was selected to "Best Lawyers in America" from 1983-2012. While working at Oppenheimer Kim met Luz Robles who he would marry and spend the next 44 years of his life with.
Kim was involved with the Kiwanis Club of St. Paul, Shakopee Knights of Columbus, Mendota VFW, Mend- Eagan and Sibley Area youth athletic associations. He was instrumental in helping start a girls hockey league in Mendota Heights by approaching neighboring communities in order to combine programs to start what was then known as the Sibley Area Wings Girls Hockey Program.
Kim was an accomplished professional who retired in 2012 after 40 years. Of course, he would briefly come out of retirement every year when his children came calling for help on their tax returns.
Kim cherished road trips to National Parks like Badlands, Rocky Mountain, Yellowstone, and Grand Teton. In addition to road trips, he enjoyed several family trips to Europe with his favorite being to his mother country of Ireland. He loved attending sporting events of all kinds and was cheering as loudly at his children's youth sporting games as he was at the 1987 and 1991 Twins World Series games. Not even a stroke in 2021 or dementia could keep Kim from attending his grandchildren's sporting events in the last few years. Kim was happiest when surrounded by family, especially his 7 grandchildren and 3 grand puppies.
Kim spent the last 6 months at Lilydale Senior Living Memory Care. The family would like to thank the staff at Lilydale Senior Living and Ecumen Hospice for the exceptional care they provided Kim. The family was always comforted knowing that Kim was in such caring hands.
Kim was preceded in death by his father Kimball B. Devoy, mother Ruth Weiland, step father Frederick "Sky" Weiland, and sister Mary Gilbert.
Kim is survived by his loving wife Luz; children, Kevin (Megan), Michael (Molly), Eileen (Alex), Patricia (Luke); 7 grandchildren, Kellan, Anna, Grace, Brigid, Lily, Alice, and Isabel; sister Ruth Rich, many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Mass of the Christian burial will be held at the Church of the Assumption (51 7th St W, St. Paul) on Friday, Sep 13th at 10am. A visitation will be held before the funeral service at 9am. There will be a luncheon at the church followed by interment at Resurrection Cemetery in Mendota Heights. Memorials are preferred and can be made to St. Thomas Academy (Mendota Heights) or Visitation School (Mendota Heights).
