Kip Joseph Day, 58, of Spencer passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at IU Health Bloomington Hospital. He was born in Bloomington to David and Jody Day Sunday, January 29, 1967. A 1985 graduate of Edgewood High School, Kip went on to serve as an Artilleryman in the U.S. Army from 1987 to 1989. In 2001, he embarked on a career in Emergency Medicine, Firefighting, and Rescue, devoting himself to aiding others in the Owen County area for the next 24 years. His commitment to the safety and well-being of others extended beyond Owen County, as he also served as a firefighter in neighboring Monroe County at Stations 7 & 8 and worked with Bloomington Hospital Ambulance Service. A dedicated public servant, Kip was also a member of Task Force 7, assisting communities in other states during times of need. His selflessness, dedication, and genuine love for serving others made him an inspiration to the community and all who knew him. Beyond his service to the community, Kip enjoyed traveling, camping, photography, riding his motorcycle, and building model airplanes. He had a lifelong love of music, concerts, history, geography, storm chasing, and stargazing. Above all, he cherished time with his family and took great pride in his roles as a husband, father, son, brother, uncle, Papaw, and friend. Kip is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Tammy Day; his children, Sabrina Day of Bedford, Tiffany Carpenter (Ben) of Vincennes, Olivia Early (Brian) of Mooresville, and Daniel Rhienhart (Alisha) of Spencer; his parents, David and Jody Day of Ellettsville; his siblings, Jenny Welch (Chris) and Donna Dalton, both of Bloomington; his grandchildren, Braeleigh and Raine Bex (Sabrina), Dylan Epperson and Drake Houck (Tiffany), Brooklynn and McKaylah Hutcherson (Olivia), and Peyton, Taylor, Garrett, and Rylee Rhienhart (Daniel); and additional family members, Raymond Schneider (Linda) of Florida, along with extended family. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Guy and Betty Thacker of Bloomington; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Wallace and Bette Thomas of Spencer; and Tammy's grandparents, Bethel and Ruby Rood of Spencer. Kip's final ride with Owen County EMS will take place on Saturday, June 21, 2025 starting at Costin Funeral Chapel in Martinsville, traveling through Ellettsville and Spencer, passing Owen County EMS, and ending at his residence. Please join us in honoring and celebrating the incredible person Kip was and the legacy he leaves behind. A Celebration of Life is currently being planned. The date will be announced once determined.
