1943 - 2025
Kristine Anderson Blodget, 82, passed away after a long illness March 26, 2025 in Salem, Oregon. Kris was a remarkable woman who excelled in both science and art.
Kris graduated from Dallas High School in 1961 and from Willamette University with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology in 1965. Kris studied to be a cytotechnologist at OHSU, and interned at the Clinical Laboratory Medical Group in Los Angeles, California. She was one of the first people to be certified as a cytotechnologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. She worked for two years as a cytotechnologist at the UCLA Medical Center. She then attended the University of Hawaii and graduated with a Masters Degree in Zoology.
Kris taught biology and anatomy and physiology at Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Oregon for 15 years. There she met James Blodget, a fellow faculty member and Media Specialist at Chemeketa. They married in 1975. Their daughter, Elizabeth, was born in 1981.
Kris also worked for 20 years as an independent genetics researcher in collaboration with the University of Washington studying the Fragile X syndrome and how it is passed down in families. Her insights helped provide a better understanding into this devastating genetic disorder.
In midlife Kris decided to change careers and combine her love of both science and art. To that end she left teaching and went to Marylhurst University to pursue an art degree. In 1992 she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and became a science and medical illustrator. She was a member of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators and Print Arts Northwest. Her work was shown in regional and national exhibitions and local galleries. She did fine art in a variety of media including etching, drawing and painting, photography, pottery, pine needle baskets, bronze and ceramic sculpture, and stained glass. Examples of her work may be seen at www.blodgetstudios.com.
Kris lead an extraordinary life touching the lives of many people along the way. She will be sorely missed by both friends and family. She is survived by her husband James Blodget, daughter Elizabeth Wyman, grandchildren Emmalia and Jacob Wyman, and brother Ernest Anderson, Jr.
