KURT WELDON STONE (April 6, 1948 – September 5, 2024) was born in Atlanta to Frank and Coral Stone who met during WWII in Auckland, New Zealand, when the young army Lieutenant was on furlough from the New Guinea campaign. They corresponded after the war until Coral emigrated to the United States on the War Bride bill July 12, 1947, and were married the next day. Kurt was born nine months later, followed by his sister Susan two years thereafter. Frank was an attorney with the VA, and Coral was mother, homemaker and kindergarten teacher.
A teenage athlete, Kurt pitched for the Briarcliff High School baseball team. Widely revered for his intellect, Kurt received a bachelor's degree in mathematics from North Georgia College and a master's degree in Computer Information Science from Georgia Tech. His brilliance in programming was exceeded only by a work ethic that led him to author complex business and accounting software programs that remain in use across the country to this day.
Kurt retired to Anderson where he was surrounded by parents and his sister's family. It was in Anderson that he completed his provocative novel, The Crawfish Connection. Kurt is survived by his sister Susan and her husband Dr. Terry Holdredge, their children Meryle (husband Dallas Martin), Bethany (husband Dr. Lakshya Chandra), Allison (husband Craig Dobson), and Pikey Holdredge (wife Ema), and six grandchildren: Judah, Sarah, Jack, Vivi, Edmond, and Alastair.
Known for his wit, faith, generosity and love of history, Kurt will be sorely missed by those he leaves behind. May he find eternal rest in God's mighty hands.
