L. Joseph "Joe" Smith

L. Joseph "Joe" Smith, 88, of Lafayette, passed away on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.
Joe was born April 20, 1937, in Sullivan, to the late David and Willana (Holtsclaw) Smith. He was a 1955 graduate of Sullivan High School and continued his education at Indiana Business College earning his Associates' Degree. On December 22, 1962, he married Donna Marie (Shelton) Smith. She preceded him in death on December 15, 2016.
Joe worked as a carpenter for ALCOA for 39 years until his retirement. He was a member of The Grove Covenant Church, the ALCOA Retiree Club, and was on the Board of Directors for IFCU.
He enjoyed his weekly Bible study group and meeting his coffee buddies for coffee. Joe cherished his family. His grandchildren were his life, and he enjoyed attending their activities as well as saving momentos from each attended activity.
He is survived by his 4 children, Michael Smith of Lafayette, Andrew (Brian) Smith of McKinney, TX, Angela (Paul) Grossman of Lafayette, Aaron (Amy) Smith of West Lafayette; 5 grandchildren, Allison (Andrew) Marder, Carolyn Smith, Daniel (Meridith) Smith, Thomas Smith, and Garrett Grossman; and a sister, Garnetta (Charles) Williamson of Terre Haute.
Along with his wife, Donna, and his parents, David and Willana, he was preceded in death by his 8 siblings, David Smith, Roland Smith, Phyllis Monk, Wayne Smith, Rose Morris, John Smith, Marla Paddock, and Jay Smith.
Memorial contributions in Joe's name may be given to The Salvation Army.
Visitation will be from 10:00 am until time of service at 12:00 pm (noon), Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at Soller-Baker, Lafayette Chapel, 400 Twykenham Blvd., Lafayette, IN 47909 with Pastor Stacey Littlefield officiating.
Interment will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Park, 1200 Sagamore Parkway N., Lafayette, IN 47904
