Lamar was born on April 30, 1917 to Chester and Clara King in Detroit. He started working for Ford Motor Company when he was 13 and was a graduate of Henry Ford Trade School. During World War II he was a lead supervisor in design of the B-24 bombers at Willow Run.
Lamar married Lillian in 1938, who preceded him in death in 1985. The family summered in the Bellaire and Traverse City area. After 42 years he retired from Ford Motor Company. He remained actively involved working for the Commission on Aging and the AARP.
On Nov. 8, 1986 he married Louise Geiger in Traverse City. He loved his roses, birds, NASCAR, traveling and his dog Checkers. Lamar will always be remembered as a devoted caregiver and husband.
Surviving Lamar is his wife G. Louise King; four children, Lenore King of Laurium, Louann Merrill of Cedar, Lamar (Lynn) King II, of Dearborn, Lauren (Doug) Sheffer of Maple City; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; step-children Debbie (Edward) Hensley of Roanoke Va., Patricia (Dale) Rickerd of Roanoke, Va, Pamela (Gerry) Pouliot of Midland, Brian (Joy) Geiger of Maple City, Brad (Anne) Geiger of Traverse City; 9 step-grandchildren, and several step great-grandchildren
Lamar was also preceded in death by two brothers, four sisters and son-in-law, James W. Merrill.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, with a Rosary at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 18.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Francis Church in Traverse City at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 19. Fr. Ken Stachnik will officiate the service. Burial will take place at Lakeview Cemetery in Bellaire. Memorial contributions may be directed to Father Fred Foundation or the charity of your choice.
Arrangements are being handled by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City.
