Lanny Klinkhammer Obituary Lanny Klinkhammer, age 67, of
Howard, SD passed away Sunday, February 16, 2025. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 AM, Friday, February 21, 2025, at St. Agatha Catholic Church in
Howard, SD. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7 pm at the church with a scripture service at 6:30 pm. Burial will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Howard.
Lanny Joe Klinkhammer was born in Mitchell, SD on April 8, 1957 to George and Mae (Gassman) Klinkhammer. He was raised on the family farm near
Howard, SD. He graduated from Howard High School in 1976. Following graduation, he worked as a carpenter. He was united in marriage to Amy Hall on March 11, 1976. They had four children Jenny, Joey, Jeremy and Jody.
He started dispatching for the City of Howard. This led him to find his career in Law Enforcement. He was hired by the City of Howard as a police officer in 1987. In 1988, he became a Deputy Sheriff for Miner County. In 2000, Lanny became the Sheriff of Miner County. He retired in 2018. He was a member of the South Dakota Sheriff's Association serving and was board president in 2010. He was a member of the South Dakota Peace Officer's Association, serving on the board for five years and president in 2022-2023. In 1989, Lanny joined the Howard EMT service; he remained an EMT until 2018. He was a member of the Miner County Ambulance board from 1996 until 2022. Lanny spent 33 years patrolling for the City of Deadwood during the Sturgis Bike Rally.
In his freetime, one could find Lanny bowling, golfing and more recently summer fishing at Lake Carthage. He was very proud of his grandchildren and enjoyed watching them in various sporting events. Lanny put his carpentry skills to use, helping build and make home improvements for all his children. Lanny had an amazing heart and was willing to help anyone, helping countless citizens of Miner County through his work at the Sheriff's Office and Ambulance Service. He sacrificed many events of his children to serve his community. Lanny always found the good in others and believed in giving back.
Lanny is survived by his children, Jenny (Jeff) Grendler of Brookings, SD, Joey (Ryan) Bickett of Oldham, SD, Jeremy (Lexy) Klinkhammer of Hartford, SD, and Jody (Matt) Becker of
Howard, SD. His grandchildren Adonis, Audrey, Kennedy, Easton, Hailie, Wes, Delaney, Isabelle (Kaleb), Ellie, Anna, Michael, Sydney, Kinzey, Langdon, Bentley, and Berkley. One great grandchild Reginald. His siblings Rick (Mary) Klinkhammer, Terry (Donna) Klinkhammer, Patty Klinkhammer, Kim (Phyllis) Klinkhammer, Jim (Kim) Klinkhammer, Lynette Klinkhammer, Paul (Tami) Klinkhammer Daron (Sharon) Klinkhammer, Amy (Steve) Noonan. Several nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews. His bonus family Derek Mentele, Nick Davids, Tanner (Mackenzie) Davids and their children.
Lanny is preceded in death by his parents George and Mae Klinkhammer, his brother Greg Klinkhammer, his sister in law Janet Klinkhammer and his granddaughters Ashlyn and Keelyn Klinkhammer.
