Laquita Jane Culwell, 70, of Big Spring, Texas, passed away on September 11, 2025, in Abilene, Texas.
Visitation will be held Thursday, September 18, 2025, from 5:30–7:30 p.m. at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.
A Celebration of Life service will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 19, 2025, at Pioneer Drive Baptist Church with Pastor John Whitten officiating. Burial will follow at Elliott Hamil Dignity Memorial Cemetery under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home.
Laquita Jane Ross was born on June 26, 1955, in Monahans, Texas, to Walter Clyde “Red” Ross and Mary Ann Ross. She graduated from Coahoma High School in 1973 and earned her Associate’s Degree from Howard College in 1975. On August 26, 1978, she married the love of her life, Tommy Joe Culwell, in Big Spring, Texas.
A dedicated nurse, Laquita poured her life into caring for others. She served in various hospitals across Texas and spent the majority of her career at Cogdell Memorial Hospital in Snyder, Texas. There she worked for 20 years as Nurse Manager of the Operating Room, also serving as Chief Nursing Officer and in other leadership roles. She was deeply respected by colleagues and patients alike for her skill, compassion, and servant-hearted leadership.
Laquita was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy Joe Culwell, and by her maternal and paternal grandparents.
She is survived by her two children and their spouses, Amanda and Jerry Wyatt of Mansfield, TX, and Laura and Dustyn Anders of Abilene, TX; her cherished grandchildren, Joy Lea Wyatt and Tommy Ray Wyatt of Mansfield, TX; her parents, Red and Mary Ann Ross of Big Spring, TX; her siblings, Fairey and Elmer McMahan of Seminole, TX, and David and Helen Ross of Midland, TX; and several beloved nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to Hendrick Hospice or Hendrick Cancer Center. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Hendrick Hospice, Hendrick Medical Center North ER, the Hendrick C6 team, Dr. Joshua Gray, and Dr. Jose Vega for their exceptional care and kindness.
