Larry Lafayette Bowden 72, departed this life on January 6, 2025 at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. He was born in East Prairie, Missouri to the union of the late Lafayette Bowden and Vernita Cherry-Bowden.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, the late Lafayette Bowden and Vernita Cherry-Bowden, two brothers: Bobby Bowden, Sherman Bowden, Sr, mother-in-law, Katherine "Rene" Pillow and special friend, Clifford Jackson, Sr.
Larry was employed as a forklift driver and loaded trucks for Unimin (formerly known as Tammsco) for over 18 years. He worked there until he retired due to his decline in health.
Larry enjoyed listening to Blues music by Tyrone Davis, Bobby Womack and B.B. King. He enjoyed going hogging, rabbit and turtle hunting in his earlier years. He was given the nickname "Turtlehead" by some of the guys due to his love of turtle hunting. He also enjoyed doing mechanic work on cars, driving Dodge Ram trucks, Kubota tractors and Cub Cadet lawnmowers. During his childhood, Larry and his siblings had to frequently attend BTU (Baptist Training Union) at church and recite Psalms 23.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Charlotte Bowden of Sandusky, Illinois, two children: Veronica (Michael) Stokes of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Corey "Nick" Bowden of Sandusky, Illinois, one sister, Maggie White of Memphis, Tennessee, two brother-in- laws, Richard (Twyla) Pillow of Springfield, Illinois, Jeffrey Pillow of Sandusky, Illinois, two sister-in-laws, Doris Welch of Sandusky, Illinois and Terri Pillow of Sandusky, Illinois and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Visitation for Larry Lafayette Bowden will be held on Friday, January 17, 2025 at Massie Funeral Home in Mounds, Illinois Visitation will begin at 11:00 am until the funeral hour at 12:00 pm with Minister Alene Reed officiating. Burial will follow at Green Lawn Memorial Garden in Villa Ridge, Illinois. Professional services and care entrusted to Massie Funeral Home. Online condolences may be left at massiefuneralhome.com.
