Wardell Greer Jr., (Affectionately known as "GOV") age 66, passed away on February 3, 2026,
in
Cairo, Illinois. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend whose life
was marked by hard work, faith, and deep love for his family.
Wardell was united in marriage to his devoted wife, Ilene, for over 43 years, with whom he
shared many years of love and companionship. He was a proud father to three sons, Harvey,
Corey, and Wardell III. He was preceded in death by his daughters, TaMyra Greer-Lyons and
Kara Greer.
He is also survived by his seven loving sisters: Cora (Lee) Wright of
Cairo, Illinois; Maxine
Davis of Paducah, Kentucky; Luettha (Ken) Porter of Springfield, Illinois; Joyce (Jay) Holder of
Cairo, Illinois; Geralyn (Greg) Mason of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; Charlotte (Elder David)
Offord of St. Louis, Missouri, and Carolyn (Dr. Alywin) Kluttz of Chesterfield, Missouri. One
Sister-in-law, Stacy Greer of Covington, Georgia, one Son-in-law, Darcy Lyons of Cincinnati,
Ohio, and one uncle, Bishop Lee (Norma) McClain of Landham, Maryland. Wardell was
preceded in death by his parents, Wardell Greer Sr. and Ola Mae Greer, his brothers, Eddie Lee
Greer and James Eric Greer, and one sister Linda Martin.
Wardell leaves behind a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many cherished
friends who will forever remember his presence, humor, and generosity.
Wardell spent many years working for the Dana Corporation in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he
remained employed until his retirement. Known for his skill and determination, he was also a
talented self-taught auto mechanic who could fix just about anything with his hands. He took
pride in his work and was always willing to help others.
A man of strong faith, Wardell was a faithful member of Klondike Holy Temple Church of God
in Christ, serving under the leadership of Pastor Lee and Cora Wright. His faith was a steady
foundation throughout his life.
Above all, Wardell loved his family unconditionally. He found joy in simple pleasures-fishing,
watching television, and ordering clothes from Temu. His warmth, devotion, and quiet strength
will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Services for Wardell Greer, Jr. were held on Sunday February 8, 2026 at 1:00 pm at the Klondike Holy Temple COGIC in
Cairo, IL. Burial followed in the Oakgrove Cemetery in Charleston, Missouri with Pastor Lee Wright, Eulogist and Elder David Offord, Expeditor of services. Visitation was Sunday at the church from 12:00 pm until the funeral hour at 1:00 pm. Professional Services and Care was Entrusted to Massie Funeral Home in
Mounds, Illinois.
