Larry E. Bowling, affectionately known as "Chief" or "LaLa" to his loved ones, passed away at his home in Greenville, SC, on February 27, 2025, at the age of 96. Born on February 1, 1929, in Pickens, SC, Larry was a man whose life was marked by service, love, and an unwavering sense of humor.
Larry's early years in Pickens set the stage for a life of dedication and hard work. He was the son of the late Birdie Medlin Bowling and James Thelma Bowling, and brother to the late Mattie Bowling Wheatley. His beloved wife, Louise Murr Bowling, and his son, Barry Bowling, preceded him in death, as did his sister and granddaughter, Tessa Roddy Andrasik.
He is survived by his loving family, including his daughter Beth Bowling Roddy (Charles), his son Bentley Bowling, his grandchildren Tamatha Roddy, Tyler Roddy, and Trevor Roddy, and his great-grandsons Brysyn and Braydyn Andrasik. Larry also held a special place in his heart for his honorary granddaughters, Toby Hixon, Courtney Roddy, and Chelle Rogers, who brought him immeasurable joy and companionship.
Larry's commitment to his community was evident through his distinguished work history. He served with honor from 1949-1980 at Parker District Fire Department and as the fire chief at GANTT Fire Department from 1981-1989. His leadership and bravery were hallmarks of his career, and he left a legacy of service that will long be remembered by his colleagues and those he helped throughout his years of service.
A proud veteran, Larry served his country as a member of the United States Marines, embodying the Corps' values of honor, courage, and commitment. His patriotism was a core part of his identity, and he carried the lessons learned in the Marines throughout his life.
Beyond his professional and military service, Larry was a man of many talents and interests. He had a green thumb and found solace in tending to his garden vegetables. He was a skilled handyman and took pleasure in home renovation projects, always ready to lend a hand or share his expertise. Larry's daughter, Beth, fondly remembers thrift store shopping adventures with her father, where his keen eye for a bargain was unmatched.
Larry's sense of humor was legendary, and he was known for telling stories—some of which were lovingly embellished—to the delight of his family and friends. His optimism and funny anecdotes were a source of light and laughter in the lives of all who knew him.
An avid fisherman, Larry cherished his time by the water, whether it was a quiet morning casting a line or a lively beach trip to Garden City, where he enjoyed low country boils and grilling with loved ones. His dog, Footsie, who passed away six months prior, was a faithful companion, and the two could often be found enjoying the simple pleasures of life together.
Larry's home was a hub of warmth and hospitality, a place where family and friends gathered to share in the joy of each other's company. His legacy is one of love, laughter, and the enduring bonds of family. He was the epitome of a life well-lived, and his memory will be cherished as a testament to a man who was truly handy, optimistic, and funny.
As we bid farewell to Larry E. Bowling, we celebrate a life that touched so many and left the world a better place. His spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him, and his stories will be told for generations to come. Rest in peace, Chief. Your legacy of love and laughter will never be forgotten.
