Larry Thomas Burns, 74, Tonganoxie, KS, passed away Saturday August 9, 2025, at his home.
A Celebration of life service will be 11 am August 30, 2025, at Cornerstone family worship. The family will receive friends for 1 hour prior starting at 10 am. Burial will follow in Hubbel Hill Cemetery, Tonganoxie. Larry was born December 26, 1950, in Lebanon, MO, the son of Homer and Wilma (Hall) Burns. He grew up in Kansas City, KS, and graduated from Wyandotte High School class of 1968. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a Vietnam Combat Veteran. He earned his bachelor's degree from Wichita State University. He had a lengthy career in Law Enforcement serving in Madison, KS before years of service in Tonganoxie retiring from the Tonganoxie Police Department in 2011. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and American Legion. He served for 20+ years as a member of the Leavenworth Veterans Day Parade Committee. He was a member of the Kansas City chapter of the Gunslingers Motorcycle Club. He was preceded in death by two wives Darlene Burns and then his second wife D.J. Burns. Larry enjoyed trips to southern Missouri spending time on his family farm. He enjoyed attending all his grandkids events and spending time with them. Larry never knew a stranger and will be missed by everyone who knew him. His legacy will live on through his grandchildren. Survivors include; daughter, Nance Copeland, Browns Mills, NJ; son, Kevin McGuire, Blue Springs, MO; sons Jason Johnson (Michelle) Wellsville, KS, David Rupp (Amanda), Leavenworth, KS; daughters Jessica Karten (Dave), Perry, KS, Stacy Lister (Ryan) Baldwin City, KS; 15 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial donations in Larry's name to the Fraternal Order of Police of your choice.
