Larry Winston Cavanaugh, born on June 29, 1940, in Leesville, Louisiana to Mabel and Garland Cavanaugh, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on February 20, 2026, at the age of 85. Larry was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. All who knew him loved him.
After his graduation from Leesville High School, Larry enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served for eight and a half years. While serving, he was married to his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Linda Jean Deon. His final post in the Navy brought him to Kingsville, Texas where he and Linda raised their two children, Jeff and Sally. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Navy, Larry began his career at the Celanese Plant in Bishop, Texas, becoming one of the youngest supervisors at the plant. Larry continued to give back by joining the American Legion Post 185 in Bishop, Texas, where he proudly served as Commander for several years. He also belonged to the VFW Post 2375 in Kingsville, Texas, where he was humbled to serve as a member of the Honor Guard and attend funerals of fellow veterans.
Larry was an amazing cook, and nothing pleased him more than feeding family and friends. He enjoyed being outdoors fishing and hunting. He was happiest spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed watching his grandkids and great grandkids in all their varied extracurricular activities. He touched the lives of everyone who had the honor of knowing him. He had a selfless, warm, and generous spirit and will be remembered forever.
The greatest lesson he shared with us is the importance of kindness and the act of showing love to one another. He could make the sunshine when there were clouds. His many quirky sayings will always be with us.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents, Mabel and Garland Cavanaugh, and his sister, Betty Howard.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Linda, his son Jeff (Dawn), daughter Sally (Doug), grandchildren: Matthew (Tina) Cavanaugh, Ashley (Ernest) Colin, Miles (Reba) Cavanaugh, Jamie (Cory) Bearce, Macy (Wade Rogers) Cavanaugh; great-grandchildren: Jaxon, Brooxe, and Mattix Cavanaugh, Shane, Tyler, and Hailey Colin, Saige and Rory Cavanaugh, and Larryana Rogers.
Larry is also survived by his sister Shirley Shirley, brother Garland ‘Sonny’ Cavanaugh, brother Jack Cavanaugh, and numerous nieces and nephews.
All services will be held at the First Baptist Church, 311 E. 5th Street, Bishop, Texas. Visitation will be on Friday, February 27, 2026, from 5:00pm to 8:00pm with a prayer service at 6:00pm. Funeral service will be Saturday, February 28, 2026, at 10:30am, graveside to follow at Restland Cemetery in Bishop, Texas.
