Larry Van Cooper, born on November 5, 1949, in Fayetteville, NC, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2026, surrounded by his beloved family.
Larry was a dedicated self-employed residential builder who took immense pride in his craft, leaving a lasting impact in the communities he served. A graduate of the University of Georgia, Larry earned his Bachelor of Science in Business, which laid the foundation for his successful career in construction. His unwavering work ethic and commitment to quality earned him the respect and admiration of both clients and colleagues alike.
While attending college, Larry also enlisted in the Georgia Army National Guard. It was here that he was platoon guide to his oldest and dearest friend, Tommy Burdette. They were recognized as the Number 1 and 2 recruits in physical training certification exercises and also received expert rifle badges together. He treasured this friendship. He was very proud to be a Veteran.
Larry was not only known for his professional endeavors but also for his active participation in his community. He attended Athens Church, where he built lasting relationships and friendships, reflecting his values of service and connection.
He is survived by his children, John Ashley Cooper and his wife Annie, and Rainey Cooper Carroll and her husband Chris, alongside his grandchildren, Gabby Carroll and Maddie Carroll, who were a source of great joy in his life. His sister, Linda Cooper Alford, as well as his nephew and nieces - Rusty Alford, Allison Mayo, and Susan Garnto - also cherish his memory.
Larry is predeceased by his parents, Homer Lyle Cooper and Martha Sue Millsaps Cooper, who instilled in him the values he carried throughout his life, and his grandson, Grayson Cooper Carroll.
Family, friends, and all who knew him are invited to honor Larry's life at Lord & Stephens Funeral Home in Watkinsville, GA. A visitation will be held on January 10, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, followed by a Celebration of Life at 1:00 PM
Larry Van Cooper leaves behind a legacy of love, integrity, and dedication that will continue to inspire those he touched throughout his life. He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
