Larry Dale Freeman, Jr, 69 of Athens passed away on August 26, 2025 following a courageous battle with Glioblastoma. Larry was born on September 18, 1955 in Ramsgate, UK to Larry D. Freeman, Sr. and Patricia Carpenter Miles. The young family was stationed in Germany while Larry Sr, was with the U.S. Airforce. Upon completion of their military service, the family settled in Athens, GA.
Larry attended Clarke County schools, graduating from Clarke Central High School in 1973.
He was a jack of all trades, and after continuing his education at Athens Technical College and the University of Georgia, Larry began a long career as an educator. He was a well-loved teacher at Cedar Shoals High School (where he met his wife, Laura) and Social Circle High School. Throughout his career, he received many awards (including Teacher of the Year at Social Circle), had positive impacts on his students, and made lifelong friends. He returned to Clarke County Schools in 1997 and retired as the Director of Plant Services in 2011.
Larry loved retirement and took full advantage of this time to pursue many activities and adventures. He was active in website development, but his true passion was music. He started his own bands, joined other bands, and attended many concerts all around Athens and the surrounding areas. Larry was a talented musician, with his specialty being a drummer and percussionist. Whether it was sitting behind his drums or his bongo set, Larry was in his happy place. He also had a fondness for his vehicles. You could often see him cruising around town on his Ruckus scooter, a BMW convertible or his prized possession, a 1970 Cadillac Calais. From sky diving to riding roller coasters with his son and everything in between, to say Larry lived life to its fullest would be an understatement.
He was well known, loved by many, and will be missed.
Preceded in death by his parents, Larry is survived by his loving wife of almost 50 years, Laura Malinowski Freeman, devoted son Alex Freeman (Rachel) of Athens, precious grandchildren Ayla Jane and Wyatt Stone Freeman of Athens, brother Robert Freeman (Tommie) of Carrollton, GA, sisters and brothers in law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 29, 2025 at 1PM at Lord and Stephens East Chapel with Pastor David Cloud officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Memorial flowers are appreciated along with donations to the American Cancer Society or charity of your choice.
