Obituary of Larry Goldberg
Lawrence "Larry" Goldberg was born on Chicago's South Side on September 23, 1940, at Michael Reese Hospital, the son of Joe and Molly Goldberg. He passed away peacefully with his wife Janice, daughter Barrie, and son Alex by his side on Wednesday, October 15, 2025.
From an early age, Larry and his younger brother, Bruce, shared a childhood marked by quirky but telling moments. Concerned that her boys weren't getting enough fresh air, their mother devised a unique "outdoor" activity: she bundled them into snowsuits and had them stand by open windows, ensuring a dose of fresh air even during Chicago's harshest winters. That unconventional spirit and a resistance to the ordinary became a defining trait in Larry's personality.
He grew up under the watchful eye of a doting Jewish mother, devoted to protecting him-perhaps sometimes overprotective, but always rooted in deep love. Larry graduated from Von Steuben High School in Chicago, earned his undergraduate degree from DePaul University, and later completed a master's degree at the University of Chicago.
In 1965, Larry welcomed his firstborn, a daughter named Barbara (Bobbie). He later welcomed another daughter, Nancy, in 1968, followed by his son, David, in 1969.
On January 30, 1972, Larry married his life partner and love, Janice. Shortly afterward, they made their home in Hyde Park, Chicago. In 1976, their daughter, Barrie, was born. In 1979, the family moved to St. Charles, Illinois, and in 1983, welcomed their son, Larry's sidekick and copilot in many adventures, Alex.
They lived in St. Charles for decades, building a life full of laughter, memories, and deep family roots. In June 2022, Larry and Janice relocated to Colorado.
Larry lived through the turbulence and promise of the 1960s and '70s. A true man of leisure and eclectic tastes, he was a lover of mystery novels, scotch, good steak dinners, Mel Brooks, and Eminem. As a boy, he took streetcars through the neighborhoods of Chicago, stopping at Wrigley Field to catch a Cubs game with some buddies. He attended the University of Illinois Chicago when it was briefly at Navy Pier and played poker with Gene Siskel. He traveled, he encountered the world, and he left imprints of humor, curiosity, and the occasional head-scratching moments in the lives he touched.
But above all, his greatest and most lasting legacy lies in his family: his children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter.
Larry is survived by his beloved partner in crime, Janice; his children, Bobbie (Dennis) Noto, Nancy Levy, David (Keyla) Levy, Barrie (Ryan) Alpert, and Alex Goldberg; his grandchildren Sydney (Thomas), Ilyssa (Andrew), Eric, Hannah, Sol, Maggie, Brodie, and Tate; and his great-granddaughter, Bella.
He was predeceased by his parents, Molly and Joe; his brother, Bruce; his in-laws, Junie and Mabel Kiser; his sister-in-law, Joni; nephew, Zachary; and many cherished aunts and uncles.
Larry's life was a tapestry of sayings, wild stories, jokes, and laughter. He often reminded us that life is complicated-but love endures.
