Larry Lee Hart, age 83, passed away Tuesday, February 27, 2024 at his residence under Hospice Care in Louisville, KY. He was born September 7, 1940, on Route 5 (Hoods Creek) in Boyd County, son of the late Silas Hart and Lucy Tackett Hart.
Larry Lee graduated from Ashland High School in 1958. He was co-captain of the 1958 Ashland Tomcat basketball team, senior class treasurer, and represented Boyd County at Bluegrass Boy's State. He graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1962 with a B. S. degree in Commerce with a major in accounting. During three summers of college, he served as a lifeguard at the Bellefonte Country Club.
After college graduation, he moved to Louisville and spent the rest of his career serving in financial services businesses. He started by being hired by a national CPA firm, Lybrand, Ross Brothers, & Montgomery. Subsequently he became Controller of Life Insurance Company of Kentucky. In 1975, he founded a CPA firm in Jeffersontown, KY. He was a CPA for 50 years, a Certified Financial Planner for 28 years, and investment representative with Money Concepts for 18 years. The CPA firm is the oldest CPA firm in Jeffersontown and is now known as Financial Landing, CPAs.
He was a very active member of Jeffersontown United Methodist Church for 57 years. In addition to serving on finance and stewardship leadership roles, he taught youth Sunday school classes, lead long-range planning teams, created the church's Endowment Fund, headed the church's 200th anniversary committee, and was Administrative Board Chairman for several years. Beyond the local church, he was on the Board of Directors and Finance Committee of the Kentucky United Methodist Foundation for 12 years. At UK, he and Kay were active in the UK Wesley Foundation. Christianity has always been a focus of their family life.
In 1994, he was commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel. At different stages of his life, his hobbies were photography, genealogy, and woodworking. He was the author of "History of the Hart Family in Boyd County, Co-Author of "Home Alive in '45" (his father's WWII memoirs), "My Life Story", "History of the Moore Family in Boyd County", and the "Biography of Irene Kay Moore Hart". Copies of these documents are in the Ashland Public Library Genealogy Department.
He was a devoted sports fan --- mainly UK sports and KY high school sports. He played basketball in elementary, middle, and high school in addition to playing intermural basketball at UK.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years Kay Moore Hart (who was his high school sweetheart), daughters Lisa Kay Robbins (Marc), Mary Beth Coates (Jeff), son Larry Lee Hart, Jr (Renae), grandchildren Katelyn Robbins McGee (Dan), Matthew Robbins, Natalie Coates, Hannah Coates, Nick Coates, Jessi Hart, Jacob Hart, and great grandchild Cooper McGee. His older brother, Ralph Hart (Linda), and several cousins, nieces and nephews who are spread throughout the nation also survive him.
Visitation will be held from 12 Noon until 2 pm, Saturday, March 2, 2024 at Jeffersontown United Methodist Church at 10219 Taylorsville Rd. His Funeral Service will begin at 2 pm Saturday at the church immediately following his visitation. Burial will be in the Jeffersontown Cemetery on Watterson Trail in Jeffersontown.
Expressions of celebrating the good, faithful servant, and well-lived life of Larry Lee Hart, may be sent to Jeffersontown United Methodist Church, 10219 Taylorsville Rd., Louisville, KY 40299, and designated for the Endowment Fund.
