Larry Lee Hopper, age 75, passed away on December 11, 2025, surrounded by family and love. Born on February 2, 1950, in
Beloit, Wisconsin, Larry was the son of Robley "Bob" and Alice Hopper.
Larry proudly served his country in the United States Navy, spending his service years aboard the USS Lafayette submarine. His Navy experience shaped his discipline, pride, and deep appreciation for camaraderie. After returning home, he continued his journey at the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater, where he became an accomplished baseball player and made lifelong friends.
In the early 1980s, Larry managed the Top O'Town in Beloit – a lively chapter in his life not only because of the longtime friends he made, but because it's where he met the love of his life, Belinda Mauermann. The two married on May 10, 1985, beginning a partnership built on humor, loyalty, and the constant presence of family.
Larry later owned and managed Hanson's Tavern in Beloit for 20 years. His booming laugh, huge hugs, and unmistakable voice filled the place; you could hear Larry before you saw him. He created a welcoming atmosphere that made the tavern a foundational part of the community – and a second home for many.
After stepping away from Hanson's, Larry spent 10 years greeting golfers at Geneva National. He loved the early mornings, the energy of the course, and the countless conversations that let him continue doing what he did best; making people feel welcome.
Larry was a devoted father to Shannon (Douglas), Garry (Tiffany), Brett (Anne), and Justin (Heather), and he cherished being "Grandpa/Papa" to his seven grandchildren – Julia, Owen, Natalie, Max, Evelyn, Claire, and Sylvie – who brought him endless pride and joy. He loved supporting his children through their sporting events throughout their youth and remained an avid sports fan himself. He and Belinda were especially devoted Wisconsin Badger football fans, holding season tickets for over 40 years and rarely missing a game.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents, Robley and Alice Hopper, and his niece, Bridget Stapleford. He is survived by his loving wife Belinda, his children and grandchildren, and his three sisters - Linda (Mike) Stapleford, Kay (Greg) Walters, and Barb Hopper – as well as many loving in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends who will feel his loss deeply.
Larry will be remembered for his laughter, his stories, his loyalty, his passion for sports, and above all, the deep devotion he had for his family. His spirit lives on in the lives he touched and the memories he leaves behind.
The family extends a heartfelt thank you to Willowick Moments and Heartland Hospice for the exceptional care and compassion they provided to Larry in his final months.
A small family ceremony will be held, with a celebration of life planned for a later date to honor his life in true Larry fashion.
