Emeritus Pastor Larry W. Myers
Larry Wayne Myers was born on September 1, 1946, at Saint Francis Hospital in Cape Girardeau, MO, the son of Wilma Mabel (Biri) Myers and Willard Dickman Myers. For more than 50 years the family home was in Jackson, MO, where he was baptized in the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit on November5, 1946, and confirmed in the Christian faith on April 10, 1960, at St. Paul Lutheran Church.
The Rev. Dr. Walter Keisker began recruiting him for the Office of Public Ministry when he was in the 4th Grade. As a Freshman in high school, he finally relented and agreed, remaining in school at Jackson H.S. until college. He attended St. Paul College, Concordia, MO; Concordia Senior College, Fort Wayne, IN, and Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, MO. He was also a student in the M.A. and Ph.D. programs in Classical Languages (Greek & Latin) at Saint Louis University, St. Louis, MO. Additionally, he attended the summer programs of the American Academy in Rome and the American School of Classical Studies in Athens.
He was ordained on June 25, 1972, together with classmate Stephen Bruening, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jackson, MO. His service in the church included: Lutheran Church in Korea; Concordia College, St. Paul, MN; Trinity Lutheran Church & DSMP- LCUSA Field Service Pastor for Europe & the Middle East, Frankfort am Main, West Germany; Concordia College, Austin, TX; Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, MO; the LCMS Commission on Theology and Church Relations; Milwaukee Lutheran High School; and Elm Grove Lutheran Church, Elm Grove, WI. His fields of academic teaching were Classical Languages and the New Testament.
Myers was commissioned as an Air Force Reserve Chaplain in February 1972. He retired after 30 years of commissioned time in 2002 at the rank of Colonel. His assignments ranged from base level to the highest levels of command, including two Reserve Numbered Air Forces, one Major Air Command, two assignments in the USAF Chief of Chaplains office, and the Joint Staff of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The first-ever chaplain of any Reserve branch on the Joint Staff, he was on duty in the Pentagon on 9/1 1 in 2001 and remained for nearly 60 days to assist with ensuring religious support for mobilized and deployed military personnel. His military education included: Squadron Officers School (correspondence); Air Command and Staff College (seminar); Air War College (correspondence); and the Academic Instructors School. His most distinctive awards included: Legion of Merit; Defense Meritorious Service Medal; Joint Service Commendation Medal; Air Force Commendation Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; National Defense Service Medal with two bronze stars; and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal with silver hourglass device and two mobilization devices.
Myers retired from full-time ministry at the end of 2016. He remained active in overseas teaching and parish opportunities, including: the U.S.A., India, Sri Lanka, Ukraine, and South Korea. His other activities included: an active Rotarian for 30 years; member of the Board of Directors of Lutheran Heritage Foundation and the Board of Directors of Spero Senior Ministries; Commissioner on the City of New Berlin Police and Fire Commission; member of the 440th Airlift Wing Community Council (including chair of the Executive Committee) & 128th Air Refueling Wing Community Council; and a member of the Air Force Association, Reserve Officers Association, American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Surviving him is his son, Christoph-Martin Mattias Myers, who was born in Germany and for whom Emeritus Pastor Myers devoted the majority of his adult life. Also surviving him are his sister Peggy Sneller (Grayslake, IL), nephew Brent Sneller (Bartlett, IL), and niece Beth (Mark) Earnest (Waukesha, WI).
Emeritus Pastor Myers' greatest love was the classroom where he tried to motivate and encourage students of all ages in learning the world and theology. For him the most important thing was the Christian faith, and even in death he prays that he influenced at least a few students who will share the story of salvation with fixture generations. We commit him into the arms of our Heavenly Father, whose mercy, manifested in the cross of His Son, Christ Jesus, is unbounded and everlasting.
To God be the glory!

My memories... In the academic year of 1984-1985, I also was in West Germany near Frankfurt while Larry was the pastor of the Lutheran congregation there. He chose to help me ship to my home for Christmas a Weihnachts Pyramid 4 tiers high(!) -- I almost was able to see him again in 2023 in Milwaukee during the LCMS convention, but he wasn´t feeling well. He certainly had quite a number of accomplishments as a member within God´s family!

Pastor Myers was a wonderful Minister at Elm Grove Lutheran Church and School. His door was always open, and he shared his knowledge and Love of Christ by ministering to all. God has now taken him home, but his kindness to all will never be forgotten.
