Larry Kyle "Toad" Nelson, age 67, of Bandy, Virginia, passed away at a
Richlands, Virginia, hospital on Thursday, May 15, 2025.
Larry was born July 1, 1957, in
Richlands, Virginia, the son of the late Harold Gladstone Nelson and Virgie Lucille Jewell Nelson. Larry was born with several birth defects that limited him throughout his life, yet he never gave up, never felt sorry for himself, and was determined to be an overcomer. His loving mother saw that Larry was one of a kind, with a soul that displayed true selflessness, humbleness, love, and heartfelt caring for others. He became the family glue; his love for his family was unlimited. In return, his family never saw him as a burden but as a gift from God. He had a routine where he would call each family throughout the day and update everyone on how the others were doing.
Larry never met a stranger; his sweet spirit drew people to him, and he, in return, gave them a feeling of peace. He loved volunteering at the hospital to socialize and help those who needed him. He was awarded the 2019 Volunteer of the Year award for being such an outstanding asset to the hospital. He loved volunteering in the cardiac rehab center after surviving a heart attack; he could empathize with the patients there. He was a proud supporter of the March of Dimes and would help to raise money for their charity. One year, he was presented with a certificate for his fundraising and lifetime support of the March of Dimes. Larry's favorite pastimes were fishing with Leroy, watching NASCAR and TV game shows, sitting on his porch in his rocking chair, and watching for deer and hummingbirds. He loved to listen to Ron Brown on WGTh, especially when he broadcast the RHS football games. Larry had attended the Bibleway Church in Raven and was a lifetime resident of the area. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving canine companion, Friskie, and one special niece, Michelle Lakey Waldron.
