Larry G. Nelson, 76, of Apache Junction, AZ and Dilworth, MN, passed away Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in his home.
Larry Gordon Nelson was born October 20, 1948, the son of Gordon “Oxie” and Joyce (Costello) Nelson, in Fargo, ND. He spent his formative years in Dilworth where he was raised and graduated from High School in 1966. During his high school years, Larry cherished his summers working for his grandparents at their resort, Costello Beach, on Lake Cormorant. Following high school, he attended Moorhead State University where he studied Business Administration.
Larry’s professional journey would take him to Minneapolis, MN, where he would work for Burlington Northern Railroad, before relocating to Las Vegas, NV, where he worked construction. Upon his return to Fargo, he started a publishing company and distributed Tidbits weekly newspapers filled with trivia, fun facts, amusing stories and oddities. He eventually found his true calling as the owner and operator of Northwest Imports. He loved buying older vehicles and fixing them up to be sold either on his lot or at the auction. For the last 15 years, he has resided in Apache Junction, AZ, and spent the summer months in Dilworth with family. He loved his time in Arizona spent enjoying the beautiful scenery and getting away from the cold.
Larry was passionate about weightlifting, competing in national squat, deadlift and bench press competitions where he achieved first place recognition at the age of 41. He also had a keen interest in garage sales, often seeking out vintage items to fix or restore. A devoted animal lover, Larry cared deeply for rescue dogs who became his devoted companions throughout his life. Among his greatest joys in life were the times spent as an uncle with his niece and great nieces, creating lasting memories. He will be remembered as a kind and loving person that would do anything for anyone.
He will be dearly missed by his mother, Joyce Nelson, Dilworth; sister, Deb Hendrickson, Dilworth; niece, Brittany (Charlie) McPherson, Fargo; great-nieces, Addie, Lydia and Evie McPherson; his faithful companions, dog, Benji and cat, Molly; his aunts and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Gordon; and longtime companion, Mary “Torchy” Doschadis.
A Gathering of Family and Friends for Larry will begin at 1:00 PM, Saturday, July 19, 2025, followed by a Celebration of His Life at 2:00 PM, in Grace United Methodist Church, Moorhead.
Larry will be laid to rest in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Moorhead.
